Hi guys,

I’m curious, does anyone know whether or not rust erasers like the one included with the oil on this one:
Yoshihiro TSOIL 100% Pure Tsubaki Japanese Knife Maintenance Oil With Complimentary Sabitori Rust Eraser, 3.4 oz, Large, Golden Yellow

Whether or not say if you have a s
All rust / dirt / something forming or caught in the coating - does this wear the coating down? Scratch or remove it?
Thank you all for your time,

Josh

I have no experience with that particular rust eraser, but every rust eraser I've ever handled was abrasive, like sandpaper.

From my experience rust erasers are only for bare steel.

All of the 'rust erasers' I've seen are abrasive, being silicon carbide grit embedded in a rubbery matrix.

More responsible dealers will include a warning, to avoid using them on polished blades or any other blade on which you don't want the finish altered. They'll leave a satin finish on a blade similar to a medium-grit SiC sandpaper finish. That's fine for user knives already finished that way. But they'll also ruin a polished, mirrored finish in a heartbeat, and would also strip or scratch any coatings on blades.

I think the rust erasers were originally marketed to users of yard tools, gardening tools, etc., which aren't usually worried about in terms of cosmetics, as we do with our high-dollar knives.

I agree , the rust erasers should remove the coating as well as the rust. Try a lemon , or vinegar and water to remove rust. You can also use molasese to remove rust slowly.

Hey guys. So I took the plunge and pushed as hard as I could and scraped. The coating was untouched. This Japanese stuff is the real deal, I’ve also removed rust from knives with this for about 6 years. On my mora 2000 with mirror finish it did scratch but that’s also because I went against the grind grain.
