Do Langets weaken the shaft and make the head more likely to break off?

I just bought a Cold Steel War Hammer. I'm thinking about not installing the langets. I'm lucky enough to have a CS mace and I did install the langets on that. I'm wondering now if I made a mistake. For one thing, it makes replacing the shaft a LOT harder.

I've also heard (Especially with the mace) that the langets will actually cause the head to snap. Apparently they act as a lever, and then don't allow the shaft to flex. I've seen pic of langeted maces with the head snapped right off. Is this true?

This Cold Steel mace doesn't have langets installed. The CS War Hammer does. They LOOK cool, but I'm thinking of leaving them off.

I'm not seeing how langets would help the head stay on any weapon. I believe from the way they were put in they might have been there to protect the shaft from breaking if you didn't hit the axe head square on your target. If what you are looking for is to keep the war head on the shaft then I say you might not want to add them. Hope I helped.

Langets are installed so in battle other edged weapons won't be able cut off the head of your weapon . As far as them weaking the shaft I doubt it as long as the screws your using to mount them aren't to long shouldn't affect the shaft. I would think if anything the langets should make it stronger but they do add some extra weight for sure.
