Do most collect Custom Bucks or EDC their Custom Bucks?

I was just curious if anyone uses their custom Bucks as EDC's? I'm reaching a point where I really want to use them even though my knife collecting friends are trying to discourage me to keep them or sell them.

Pit,Go Ahead! DUC [dress up carry ] is the answer...If they are NOT a investment..Why not??? Kathy my wife said 'Who are you saving them for ?'

EDC? No, not usually. I do sometimes carry one just for show and tell, but if I plan on using them for anything I carry something else.

I constantly face that dilemma. To date, my solution has been to buy two of whatever I am going to use. However, the customs just beg to be used. I guess that if you are in it for investment, keep them mint. If you are in it for the joy of using one of the finest knives made, go for it.

I constantly fight the urge to carry one but I can't bring myself to do it. I have bought a couple of used ones that I carry. I bought 5 of the 112 Elk and planned on carrying one and giving a couple as Christmas presents but after getting the first three and they look so good I just can't carry one. I just look at them and wipe them off and put them back up. Some of my friends think I am crazy for paying so much for a knife and not using it. Sometimes I wonder myself.

I know your question was about custom shop knives, but after years of collecting and not using older Case knives, I found that I get a lot more enjoyment out of carrying them and using them. Granted, if it is a really rare mint condition knife, I won't subject it to any hard use. Nothing more gratifying than pulling out a nice, out of the ordinary knife, and puttin it to use.

Just having a large amount of knives that get taken out and fondled once in a while, really lost something for me. Its hard for me to get real attached to anything that sits in a box.

They are tools and meant to be used. Use em and start making some memories.

I know this will ruffle some feathers, and this is not meant to put down any of the custom shop knives, but lets be honest about it.
We are not talking about 1000 dollar knives, and with the exception of some blade steels, can still be ordered 5 days a week....

That said, many folks enjoy collecting and not using the knives, and that is fine too. Everyone looks at it differently. There is no right or wrong way to enjoy knives.

i agree 100% i have two cs 110s one was over 300.00 that one is my weekend knife or dinner knife if i buy a knife at some point in time i am going to carry it i just can't resist but then again I'm the type that watches barrett-jackson and don't see how these guys have these classic car from the 60s /70s with 10.000 miles on them .myself i would drive the wheels off them that's what they where made for [imo]

I feel that some of my "customs" or "special" ones are like many of the custom cars and motorcycles that are built. Some were not made to drive or ride, but just to show off or display. Not that they aren't fully functional, but I just can't see taking the chance of messing one up with daily use when I can just as easily use one of the plain, common ones.;) Same goes for some of my guns. I might take them to the range, but never out in the field.

I carry and use all my knives. The Buck customs are sweet knives and I won't be able to enjoy them when I am in my grave. I admit though a few of the really pretty ones get light duty. You can always order a fresh one if you put some scratches and hard use on one.

I carry, and use, what I special. If I can't use them, why have them? On the other hand, I only have three that could be called custom. One is a 118 Limited Edition (#7 of 1000), a Kaala with custom Iron wood scales, and the last is a 301 with Iron wood/Mammoth tooth scales (#115/200). I have carried the 301, but, I have a beat up ole user that I use if the cuttin' gets rough. In my station in life, that's pretty rare any more. The Kaala goes to dinner with me from time to time, otherwise, it lays on my desk and opens my mail. Do I want more customs or LE's? Only if the price is right so that I can use them.

"If I can't use them, why have them?"

It's not that I "can't" use them, it's that I choose not to.

Why have them? Just pride of ownership comes to mind.

Well,

I think it all boils down to personal choice. I have carry knives and collector knives.
I just added a $60 301 Elk scale to my EDC rotation because life is worth living. But like Jack I won't carry my mastodon tooth 301. Thats the thing about Buck brothers no one is going to critize you for carrying a really good knife. Just so long as you sharpen it well.
Everybody hates a bad sharpening line along a blades edge.

300Bucks

I have a few really nice Bucks from the CS. I also have a few customs from individual makers. I carry them all and use them all. Knives in the range that I paid for should be used. That's most of the pleasure.
So guess I should say go ahead and use them unless they are some supper duper one of a kind knife.

I absolutely don't use my collectors knives......I will show them off to my boys and let them know someday they will inherit them. If I get one that I like alot.....and is not cost prohibitive (like the Giraffe bone 532), I will order another for use. I also am of the mind set that once you use the collector, that is one less of the serialized ones that is in perfect condition, thus increasing future value of unused ones. Plus 99% of my collectors bucks are soooooooo darn pretty, I don't want to mess them up.

Take care, Mike Arnold

"Do most collect Custom Bucks or EDC their Custom Bucks?"

Your question answers itself...Buck makes them as *customs*...they are like Faberge eggs...Meant to be admired, desired, and hidden away from uncouth eyes...and fingers... ;)

But in a practical sense, they are *not* meant to be used...if used as "knives", the blades will loosen, sit proud, and scratch easily...the scales will loosen, warp, crack, and fall off...the bolsters will corrode...the action will become stiff...

All these maladies...are detailed here in this forum... :(

No, Custom Buck's are for show only...they're like Hollywood actresses...nice to look at, but of no practical value... :)

So...Mount them (the knives; not the actresses) so that you can admire them...but *don't* attempt to cut anything with them...even an egg salad sandwich is too much strain for a Custom Buck to slice...
