Thought i would try to take apart my mini barrage to clean it out a little and to see what it looked like inside, and boy did i ever screw up.

This knife has more friggin parts than i ever imagined.

Yes, i know i voided the warranty, but i've taken apart alot of different knives and thought this one would be semi easy.
I put it back together(took forever and VERY tricky) and it's nowhere near 100% like before i disassembled it.

Looks like i'll be sending it off to Benchmade to fix it right, sharpen etc. Anyone else had any experiences with these puzzle knives?

Thats the assisted axis model with a closed position lock between the handle scales right?

Sounds challenging to say the least!

I have a mini barrage and I'm too afraid to disassemble it.

Like Eric said, Axis lock, Axis Assist and the safety switch. Sounds pretty complicated.

How is the Benchmade A/O made? My Kershaw A/O's are pretty easy to take apart and put back together, IMO.

It's the really well-made, but simple knives that give me the most trouble. Getting the parts to fit back in their places when the tolerances are ridiculously tight is a real challenge.

I believe they use a coil spring in the pivot area like on sogs assisted openers. Sogs are a total pain in the arse so i can't imagine having to deal with an axis lock on top of that

hah, you guys have obviously never taken apart a microtech otf :p... just looking at the screws drove me crazy

I've taken apart a 580 and 581 and the trick is to remove the thumbstuds allowing the blade to be past the vertical and then the coil spring slips into place when you put it back together and start closing the blade. I actually can put my assisted axis together faster than my manual models.

That's a good idea, but i'm actually having a real hard time with the "safety".

These knives are well designed that's for sure.

I had the same thing happen. It was like putting together a puzzle. Once I put it back together however it fixed the blade centering.

Yeah, I've heard Axis locks are a nightmare to disassemble, and probably that much worse with a spring assist model. I don't think I'll be taking one apart anytime soon ;)
