I'm 17 and recently got a job. Of course I always have a pocket knife (Byrd Robin II to be exact) and it proves to be quite useful at work. When someone was struggling to open a box, he told me to go in the back and get him the box cutter so I pulled my blade and gave him that instead. He looked at me like I was a ghost and asked why I had a knife. I said I always have a knife other than school or any other place you shouldn't have a knife. Since then they're cool about it and frequently ask to use it. Now they understand why I carry it cuz they really frequently use it!

Another one is more understandable when I had some girls from school over to work on a project and they happened to see my 7" KaBar Black Fighting Utility I bought months ago for kicks. They were like omg why do you have a huge knife in your room (I didn't show them where all of my pocket knives were!) They just looked at it and held it but that was it. I am really surprised at the lack of familiarity people have with knives these days. And of course they all assume they are weapons (okay the KaBar may be...)

So does anybody else get these reactions? I just think it's weird but kinda funny when my pocket knife happens to be more useful than they thought

Yeah, they want to borrow your knife but some dumb friend or co-worker is going to bust or lose your knife and give you a shrug and a grin in return. As far as your friends seeing what you keep at home that may be more than they needed to see or know but what you keep at home is up to you and whoever is in charge at your home (parents I mean). Just don't be all about knives with people and they will know you aren't a sharp tools weirdo. In this day of so many restrictions it can hurt the impression of all knife users to go overboard by flaunting your knives. Sure, seeing people struggle to do things that call for a decent knife drives us nuts but be cool about it and offer to help or keep a small SAK to lend to the 'no-knifer's'. Be a good neighbor and friend, you sound like a good young man already.

The knife at my house was just on my desk and they were all like "what is that?" I try not to show them off too much unless we're really good friends that I know will enjoy the cool factor of the KaBar :)

You should have told them "for stubborn bras that refuse to unhook" and shoot them a sly grin... that should tell you who the fun one is!!!

Honestly I get it all the time... but what I've just been reminded of is that I'm the one with the shiny sharp tool that they need, they meaning those that are looking at me like I'm crazy...

I work at a sporting goods store. most people there have come to know me as the go to guy for when they need something fixed. I don't really give a shit if people think I am crazy or not.

Crazy!?!?! ya people do, but for a multitude of different reasons haha .

I'm sure your new to the ladies; easy rule of thumb, don't be showing off the knives to them most aren't into them.

You are far from crazy when it comes to the whole knife thing, come back when you are: making, fixing , modding, buying, selling and trading them for a side job haha

yes, but it has little too do with just knives,

just keep it deep in your pocket practice deploying with out the clip. only discuss when u see others with knives.

we live in commie era, we invited them in pre WWII

read the naked commie - not speed right for a reason. book is copied righted in 1958 or so.

A lot of people only see knives as weapons these days. That is how we are being socialized into this world. When I was younger knives were bad, now guns are bad. It is just how they control the population.

Anywho, when I was the stock manager at a retail store we were required to use a "safety box cutter." I cut myself so many times with that damn thing I started carrying a knife to work. It was against company policy, but I did not care anymore because I could prove how much safer I was with the knife to the district manager. Many of the other employees would freak the first couple times they saw me use it. Especially when I got into assisted folders. "Oh my god you got a switchblade!" I have one main rule when it comes to knives in public: pull it out, cut whatever it is that needs cutting, and put it str8 back in your pocket.

I'm 18, and I've always carried a knife. I use them ALL the time and I've never thought of them as a weapon, just really cool tools. I live in an area where most guys have blades with them, so it always surprises me when someone is surprised that I carry a knife. I tend to assume that everyone has one in their pocket, lol. Just a couple weeks ago I was at guitar lessons and I didn't have the clip of my knife attached to my pants so that it wouldn't scratch my guitar. Half way through the lesson my knife fell out of my pocket and on to the floor. My guitar instructor saw it and said "carrying a weapon huh, I guess you never know what will happen at guitar lessons" he was cool with it but I was surprised when he called it a "weapon".

they are suspening, i repeat, this is explusion, for many, for:

butter knife
plastic knife

and more - thank about it - u have a knife your "about too go postal"

and the deadly spork

People who are uneducated on knives and think them as weapons, thats a huge pet peeve of mine...
Especially small traditional slipjoints...
I'll get you with this spey blade!

Yes, they think I'm crazy and it's definitely b/c of the knives. But everybody is crazy and weird when you get close enough to them. It's just a question of finding out what they're weird about. Being crazy about knives is pretty mild compared to some other people's craziness.

I told one guy "I can kill you with my thumb, why the hell would I need this knife as a weapon?" He did not think it was as funny as I did. Things are stupid these days. A pencil is one of the most dangerous items in school, yet you get suspended if you take a fork out of the cafeteria. Whatever....

i actually could kill you with my wrist. i hit door jams 2-3" from hand

i also forearm my house and door jams

the door jam shot is a one off, it takes a few weeks too heal at full speed. old school bruce lee self taight mUAY tHAI

for many decades, i demstrated once..... no details..... your either crazy or dangrous

then again i could be bad azz with a butter knife!

People who think I'm weird for carrying a knife (or gun) don't carry themselves, which I think speeds past weird into plain stupidity. So I really don't give a rat's ass what they think. If you talk to them about it long enough you can usually get them to contradict themselves on the issue too.

Most people just say "I just wouldn't need a knife that often!" and then... they're the ones that ask to borrow my knife most often.

funny thing is a cheap edc can be used for more then boxes, straps, lunch ...it can be pry or screw driver in clench.

or if your off the road and your seat belt locks - life saver.

JUST TELL THEM HOW MANY LIVES COULD BE SAVED BY SIMPLE $10 EDC

That made me cringe. Get an inexpensive MT.

I read once in the woopse section of a 4x4 magazine where a guy had rolled his truck and was stuck in his seat because the seatbelt wouldn't unlatch. He also didn't have his knife on him but luckily was able to grab a piece of 550 and saw through the belt to get free.

Ironically, if you had a little lightsaber everyone would just think it's awesome. But sharp metal? NOOooOO, only maniacs and absolute anarchists carry those.

*Sigh* humanity.
