I have looked around to find an instace other than the famous noss tests on knifetest.com and i havent heard a rat breaking. Most other brands do even if it only from time to time. Has anyone head of somebody having a problem or breaking one?

If so i would like to know how it happened.

anything will break if you use it for something that it was not intended for and beat the living $#!t out of it i.e. noss... but to the every day user like my self no they will not break:cool:

with abuse they can, there is a thread on an RC-3 whose owner broke the tip, maybe around May of this year? if you look threw the next 18 pages or so you should find it, it also contains an explanation of what happened.

Rats are solid and simple. You've basically got to go out of your way to try and break them. Even under hard use, I'm pretty sure my rats will outlast me. I've got my grandfathers WWII knife, I'm betting my great grandchildren will wind up with my rats

I've heard of 3 RATs breakin'. First one someone got pissed and stabbed a marble counter, broke the tip. Second one someone was cutting 2x4's in a basement and when it finally went through the 2x4's in carried some force with it and took a hard lick on the concrete floor breaking the tip. The third and my personally favorite is someone used a RC-6 to pry bricks out of his driveway and broke the tip.

RATs can take some pretty hard use, but use common sense, use the right tool for the job, and try to avoid doing anything stupid with it and it will hold up great.

I figure most RAT breakages are the tip from abusing the knife, although im sure its not very many!

So tip breakage is pretty much it? No cases of the knife breaking in half or something?

Obvously i know anything can break. I talking normal use but extreamly hard.

I would say our knives are capable of breaking anywhere under extremely hard use. So far we haven't had any to break in the middle that I recall, expect the Nos knife I think.

They're tough, I don't think any knife could withstand Nos' weight after taking a tough beating. lol That's the only one I know of actually snapping in half.

Tough knives, for tough lives.

I like the fact that one really has to try to break them.

I know if I had to survive with any of these knives, they would be around far longer than I.

Huge +1 here, I am still in disbelief as to the sheer quality/ruggedness/durability of my RC-6. Can't wait to order some more.

i broke the tip on my rc-3 but only because i was being VERY stupid and after embedding it in a rock hard piece of Osage Orange i then (still not sure what i was thinking) bent the knife. yeah, i tried to pry with a knife and paid the price. of course Jeff and Mike, being the incredible folks they are, replaced it. still cannot believe i did that or they did.

After the past week putting my Izula and RC-4 through their version of hell week I have had only one issue; somewhere along the line the very tip on my Izula's point bent. These are tough knives meant for tough use, and so far they have not let me down.

SOUTHSTAR, j4nator's is the story I was refering to.

RATs are great knives, with a great warrenty, and, even though they are not specificly designed to, thay can take alot of abuse.

But it doesn't need to be sent in! I figure putting it through a few more paces when I go on my next camping and/or backpacking should do the job. Either that or I need to learn to do the maintenance myself.

I appreciate the offer, but maybe next time one of your posse is in the Knox/Sevier area of East TN I could get shown the ropes of getting a tip back in "tiptop" shape instead. :)

I had the same happen to my Izula roar, I straightened it out the next time I sharpened it. No biggie.
