Do southern states have more forgiving rules at school for "weapons"

So let me start off by stating that I do not promote bringing contraban items to school, I am just sharing somthing that I found intresting about my high school.
I started noticing this year that probably about 70% of the males at my school carry pocket knives.
It is even very obvious that they have them clipped to their pockets.
So I busted out the ole school handbook and it basicly says that if you have it out and a teacher takes it. as long as you wernt threatning someone or trying to harm them with it, it will just be taken away and you come to pick it up later.
What do you guys think of this?
I do NOT bring any of my knives to school.
From what I have read most schools are not so forgiving even going so far as expulsion.

depends on.......

1.) the southern state?
2.)the county/city the school resides in?
3.)and compared to which northern states?

when i was in school which wasn't all that long ago...well yeah it was i guess, being 20 plus years now...everyone had pocket knives, teachers included. some teachers carried fixed blades on their belts, and no one thought it was weird or scary. different time i guess? wasn't anything anyone paid attention to. of course this was before the urban and suburban influx of big city progressive thinking transplants came on down and settled. i hear now they'll call the swat team in, the helicopters, and send in the sheriff's armored tank for a kid having a knife in school nowadays in the county south of me with the big city.

sounds like from your description your school has some reasonable rules all things considered being in this day and age. although i think knives are tools and a responsbile kid should be able to carry one just like i did when i was in school. also during my school years..... i never saw a knife fight or stabbing/slashing, except on tv.

all that said, follow the rules. carrying the wrong knife in some places is a felony and not worth all the trouble of losing your rights later on in life.

Man you are lucky, in my school friend got kicked out for good for having an emergency knife in his car that he parks in the student lot. I live in Kentucky, and at my school we have a zero tolerance for any knives unless under certain circumstances(approved school activity, hunting season, etc)

In TN it's a felony by statute to have a knife, ANY knife, on any school campus, kindergarten through college, public or private, with "intent to go armed". Which is gray area up to LEO/judge's definition. So the school's rules are actually a lesser matter, although of course you could possibly get expelled without getting charged criminally.

Not too forgiving, I'd say.

I dont live in a ruff city or anything, even most of the teachers carry knives in plain sight.
The other day, i was in class and a kid had bought a sucker or something and couldnt get it open so he politely walked to the corner of the room by the trash can and cut it open.
The teacher knew what he was doing he said "I think so and so is in possession of a contriban item" in a joking manner
I guise im am luck to go to such a sensible school. :)

I just moved south for college, technically we aren't allowed to have pocket knives here either which is completely dumb. In Illinois there was zero tolerance for bringing a knife to school heck neither of my work places allowed knives to be carried while working either. Completely dumb. Down here though everyone carries them anyways and I do to. I've yet to ever have anyone say anything about it. Completely different styles between the states.

My son took his 3" Gerber folder to school last year (5th grade) in northern Nevada. He thought it was cool to show his friends. One of the kids told a teacher and since it was over 2 1/2" he was suspended immediately and I had to go before the school board to plead on his behalf to not get suspended for the rest of the year. Bottom line, if you give your kid a knife he WILL it take to school no matter how much you tell him not to.

In my school (MD public school) anyone caught with a knife on school grounds is expelled and arrested. Not many people carry a knife at all around here, and I don't in school since it's just not worth the risk.

I wouldn't recommend bringing anything that could be considered a weapon into a public school. As a 51-year-old guy, I remember when just about all of us, including the girls, carried some type of small folding knife. The girls tended to carry the mini-SAK keychain fob types, while us guys carried mostly Boy Scout and Barlow type folders. A kid here in Massachusetts was recently expelled from school and criminally charged in juvenile court for disrupting a school assembly and possession of ammunition without a Firearms Identification Card. His "crime"? He was found in possession of a spent .22 rimfire casing in school! The sheeple in charge panicked, the cops were called and the whole school went into lockdown for several hours while K-9 unit cops searched the entire building. The kid now has a permanent criminal record and he is only in the 6th grade. Now how about that for "zero tolerance"!

yeah your lucky. very cool imo. as to the above, we had a girl here in Indiana who had been out hunting and shot a deer. her dad put the empty shotgun shell in her car ashtray as a memento to her first deer. later that week she went to school and someone saw it in there. they called the police and she was expelled for a empty shotgun shell. It is by far the dumbest shit I have heard of.

be glad your school district hasn't gone full stupid.

I went to school in rural Alabama, and the rules were very strict. We could not wear hooded sweatshirts with hand warmers on them. Our book bags had to be clear or mesh. Even players on athletic teams that were wearing the sweatshirts branded with the school and sport name were made to take them off while in school if they had hand warmers. All jackets had to be left in lockers while in school during the day. Basically no shirt or jacket with pockets could be worn.

yep, that's why i said...."all that said, follow the rules. carrying the wrong knife in some places is a felony and not worth all the trouble of losing your rights later on in life."

i'm not suprised at all. i wasn't really kidding about the swat team and armored sheriff's tank in the county below. it's gotten to that point. common sense and trust have been kicked to the curb. now it's knee jerk and irrational fear legislation and rule making.

what's funny is when i was in middle school, back in the early 80's...we went on a week long field trip to washington d.c. and on that went to the fbi building. during the tour they fired pistol rounds and gave us the bullet cases as souvenirs. now they actually charge a kid with a crime in mass for having a spent bullet case......wow.

I'm having a hard time believing the OP in this day and age, particularly w/o any real evidence they actually attend school. Can you at least provide us the state you're residing in? Some demographic numbers on your school district would be interesting as well; a link to your district's website would be helpful if you don't know any of that information.

Your school might be sensible but they're certainly doing you no favors with your grammar and spelling. Pay attention, what's given freely to you today will be quite expensive when you're older.

I live in a town of 700 in the texas panhandle the entire school pre-k through 12th is less than 150 kids everyone carries a knife the Ag teacher and superintendent have fixed blades on their belts every day. not a big deal
