do strider MFS lengths vary?

Sorry to ask a possibly stupid question, I am a noobie; but I have been looking at the strider MFS as an EDC and noticed that one AD lists the over all length at 8 1/4" and when I asked them if this is correct they measured it and found it to be 8 1/16". On other sites I have seen them listed at 7.5" in length. Is this an issue of actual different sizes, or different ways of measuring? I would assume that there would likely never be an exact length in hand ground knives, but +.5 of an inch seems to be a big difference.

Thanks for any help.

Regards

I have a number of Strider knives. I have more than one of some models. There are slight differences in overall length but no where near 1/'2 inch.

If Strider measured the particular version of the knife your intested for you, I would believe that the overall length they told you will be very close to what you will get.

Thanks Rich.

The Strider website doesn't say the length. And I have seen a wide variety of lengths quoted on several sites. Some say the blade is 3.5 and others 4. then overall length either 7.5 or 8+. For example bladeart and plaza cutlery say 4" on blade and 8+ overall, whereas TADgear and bluelinegear say 3.25" and 7.5 overall.

Just wondered if these places measure different parts of the knife or if there are various sizes or what?

You're welcome, Narwhal! And, welcome to BF!

They measure the knife differently. The blade is most often measured differently and some people are very casual (not very accurate) about measuring and stating sizes.
They all likely start at the point of the blade but where they stop measuring the blade is the big question.

If you bought two of the same version of the MFS from the sites with large differences in stated length, I'll bet they would be very close in every dimention once you got them in your hands.

The MFS is one of the few Strider models I don't have.

All the best,
Rich

Here are some of my Strider doubles. The large Strider Mk 1s (on the left) were made several years apart and have different blade designs but their blade lengths are virtually the same. The same is true for the two MTs on on either side of the tape measure. The two MTs were listed with 6.25" blade lengths on the Strider website. They are very close to that if measured from the point to the front of the guard. These MTs were also made several years apart and have somewhat different blade shapes, but are very close in length.

very nice collection and thank you for the info. I had a feeling that was the case. It's kind of odd that there isn't a standard way to measure.

I ordered one from TADgear - but didn't specify Kydex or nylon sheath (they offer both). I need to call them today to clarify. Anyone have a recommendation? pros and cons of each?

Thanks.

So does anyone have a recommendation between Kydex or nylon? am I wrong that the kydex will leave marks on the blade? I am looking at one of these nylon ones:

Thanks for any info

The nylon still have an insert to keep the blade from cutting through. If you really want to protect it from scratches then you can have a leather sheath made. My self I say kydex scratches add character.

The all Kydex sheath can leave marks. But, it's a Strider. Makes you feel better about using it.

For the last few years Strider has been using Nylon sheaths with Kydex that's fuzzy on one side and doesn't mark the knife.
I would go with the nylon.
