Do strops wear out?

I made a strop a few months ago, got the green chrome compound
has been working great. The strop has turned black and it just doesn' seem
to work as well anymore.

Is there a way to clean it or is that required? Or is a compound recharge required ?

Is there ever a point of no return and how do you know when you get there?
 
just keep adding compound to it. The blackening is natural. You can clean it with thinner if you want.

A common phrase is "recharging your strop". As long as there's leather, you can still strop.
 
another question - are you using the rough or the smooth side?

If using the rough - just clean it.

If using the smooth - you might consider "roughing" it up a bit - it'll hold the compound better that way. Use a fine grit sandpaper to rough the surface.
