Do thumb studs break?

Has anyone ever had a thumb stud or disc break off of a folder somehow? How do campanies (for example Benchmade) usually attach the thumb studs to the blade to ensure that they won't come loose and break off?

The trick is to avoid standing on them with your full weight...

Seriously, I'm sure it must happen occasionally, but I haven't actually heard of a case. Most thumbstuds seem to be attached with screws and are a lot stronger than the stress that's likely to be applied to them.

I broke a plastic stud off one of those Delica knokoff POS's while cutting carpet, but that probably doesn't count.

I lost one off of my REKAT Pioneer II just a few weeks back.

One minute, it is there, the next...GONE!!!

I called and REKAT sent out a nice new one, attached with allen wrench and some epoxy, and it was just like NEW!

Unless it is a POS I'm with bquinlan. It's more likely to loosen and fall out.

Most companies I've seen use lock-tite and a screw to hold them on. Except some of course who just drill a big hole

Some companies use torx screws to hold the studs in place. The only ones I've seen break are plastic thumb studs on cheap folders.

I've wanted to break off some thumb studs before. Sometimes they are too long and get in the way when you are rebeveling a knife...

(not a problem with holes though... can you tell I'm a spydie fan?)

I just bought a D2 Sifu and wonder how the thumbstuds are attached. There are no flats, grooves or anything to provide torque for removing them. Are they press-fitted together? Epoxied? Anyone know?

The knife is awesome, but someday I might like a little larger diameter thumbstuds.

I don't think Novak's .45 Shop does knives...

I had a screw twist in half on a Coldsteel Large Voyager. I was trying to unscrew the small screw to move the thumb stud to the other side. Instead of getting a replacement I decided to inlarge the hole for opening purposes. The alteration works well but it was a pain to do.

I dunno. I'd really like to see the thumb that could break off most of the studs I've seen. Must be one impressive digit.
