I have a 67 gto and the rockers are clacking and need to be snuged down, i hear 20 ft/lbs. I think they have solid lifters.

On hydraulics, yes, they do.
On older Chevy's, you loosen till they clack audibly, then tighten slowly till they just stop, then 1/2 turn more. Do that on every one.
The above is for hydraulic lifters only, and you might check with a mechanic to make sure of the amount to tighten on your GTO. My experience is with Chevy's.

On solids, you usually have to use a feeler gauge as you adjust, to get the proper clearance. I'm not sure what the tolerance is on yours.

Edited to add; Get a Chilton, or Haynes manual on your vehicle at the local auto parts store. It will give you all the right info, including instruction on how to.
Good luck.

A '67 Goat?! Sweet. Pics? :D I'm not gonna move this to Gadgets & Gear until I find out if auto questions belong there or here.

Off it goes to G&G.

Solids (mechanical) do need adjustment regularly. Mechanical lifters are louder than hydraulic as well. Hydraulics should be adjusted too, but no where near as often. Do you know if you have mechanical or hydraulic lifters?

To adjust a mechanical, a feeler guage is used, and a specific order is followed. Google for it, lots of detailed articles on how to do it.

Here's my '67: http://www.kjsl.com/~jk/chevelle

PS: Spark, a car forum would be tres

Kinzli, nice 67 Chevelle! It's my favorite year.
I bought a 67 Chevelle, SS 396, 4spd., 350 HP version new in 67.
Unfortunately, I rolled it in down a 200 foot embankment in Santa Ana canyon CA with only 5000 miles on it. Completely totaled. I don't know how I was able to walk(crawl)away from it with only some broken ribs.  :D

Thanks Mike! That's quite a story  Glad you got out without too much injury though. I like '67's too, that, and '65s as well :)

Hyd. needs to be adjusted initially and later on if something loosens. corvetteforum.com It's my main forum

ya need to find out if solid or hydraulic, is it a stock cam?? IIRC pontiac makes VERY few if any solid lifter cams, most if not all are hyd. of course if its an aftermarket cam, who knows?? but i would wager its hyd, why ya would put solids in a pontiac street motor.....??

anyway loosen till they clatter then go down one turn gen'ly works on GM's w/stock cams. also many other ways to do it.

used to set my Z/28 at zero lash, loosen till clatter, then down quarter turn, makes it rev a little higher.

my '70 nova SS w/a 373 stroker motor had an engle solid cam (.529 lift/308 duration IIRC), set at .021 IIRC, ya set the crank at 4 diff positions (TDC, add 90 degrees, add 90 degrees, add 90 degrees) and ya set certain cylinders at each of the 4 stops, motor must be hot (usually), also have seen some set w/the motor running, messy and never could do it myself (not right anyway), solids are a PAIN on the street imho. that motor would rev 8K though, not bad for a stroker motor, it had good heads too!!
