Do you carry a knife for self defense?

I'm new to this forum, and looking over the different areas, including the pratical tact. section. It appears that quite a few people are carrying knives for self-defense, or at least as a last ditch weapon. I'm curious what you guys are carrying for blades.

I carry knives to cut packing tape, boxes, plastic wrap around skids, bundle straps, etc... at work. I need a knife at work pretty regularly. I carry knives outside of work for any random cutting chores that may come up. They aren't that common, but I like to be prepared when they do come up, and even when they don't, I just enjoy having a knife on me since I love knives.

If I have to use a knife for self defense, I will. But knives are pretty crappy self defense weapons. I just don't have the love of any of the many vastly better items for self defense as I do for knives.

Hi. Welcome to the forum, from another newbie.

I carry a knife for lots of cutting purposes. I've carried one for years, off and on since I was a kid and regularly in the past decade. It's amazing how handy it is to have a knife to open things, release things, etc. when it needs to be done and, of course, no one else has anything to use. I'm also a lover of sharp, pointy tools that are of really good quality construction, so that adds to the mix. I live in Canada, so even if I did carry one for self-defense, which I don't, I couldn't say that as that's not a valid reason to carry one and could lead to arrest. Anyway, knives aren't such great self-defense tools. For me it would be a last-ditch effort to use one. :)

Welcome again!

Same here. I carry a pocket knife for random cutting chores including slicing and buttering bread, etc. If I had no choice but to use it for self defense I would do so.

When at work, (Cop) I carry an Al-Mar Sere switch blade tucked inside my waist band, behind my gun belt. I use it for a lot of things, but it's also there as a very last resort.

There is a ton of information on knife fighting if you are interested. Like most people here say, a knife is not the best self-defense weapon. Remember, if you don't know how to fight with one, chances are it will get taken away and shoved up your a** by someone who does.

JB; No thanks, I'm not interested in knife fighting...LOL! I do carry a hatchet or Bowie when I'm in the woods fishing/hunting/strolling and I don't happen to have a revolver with me. But I'm more concerned about wild animals/stray dogs than people. I was asking the forum members who carried knives as in looking over the posts for the last several days I have noticed quite a few individuals (mostly on the Pratical/Tactical forum) who appear to be quite confident in their skills and ability to defend themselves with knives. Me, oh I'm 37, and slow, no where near quick enough to wave a knife around. I think I could fend off a wild dog with my Bowie or hatchet, but I would be using basic downward chopping strokes, no fancy lunges, thrusts or backcuts. If I had to defend myself against a 2 legged assailant I would prefer use a 12 Gauge pump, .45 Auto, (in that order) or as a last ditch effort, a riot baton. But I never thought much of grabbing a knife in self-defense. So in reading all these posts, I was curious if the majority of folks on here all felt the same way as I did. I was unsure if the forum was filled with "Mall Ninja's", or primarily normal knife nuts like myself.

I carry small knives. A few of them are non-locking. I would not use them for self defense.

odds are that if I was jumped in the street, even tho I have an CRKT M16 in my pocket, I would fight open handed rather than draw it.

if you're looking for something to carry for self defense, use a baton. if you're looking for a tool, carry a knife.

Nope... cutting apples, tape, packages etc. and for that occasional urge to whittle on something.

I have no training in using a knife as a weapon. The fencing training I have seems of little use from what I have read -- very different technique. So, "No, that is not my intent." Would I try if I had no other choice? Guess so, but a wooden staff would be more comfortable.

I have carried a knife for the last 31, almost 32 years. I carry a knife to cut tape, fruit, open boxes etc. I do not carry it specfically for self defense. It is a tool. If I have to use it for self defense, I will.

I guess I'm with the majority here. I carry a slip joint everyday and a fixed blade when fishing or hunting.

I use them as tools and don't carry for self defense. I suppose if I was cornered, and it was a last resort, I'd use the best tool I have to react to the situation. Given the choice between knives and the double barrell, I'll go with the later.

I carry a Buck 110, if I have to use it for self defense I'll leave it closed and bonk the assailant on the noggin with it, then run before he comes to!

I have carried at 2 to 3 knives on me for many years (just can't decide which one I want) of course I say I use them for different tasks. Would I use or carry one strictly for self defense? Only if it were a Dark Ops (they are made for deanimation !!!!):jerkit:

No.

Er,Um, Not against a human being.
