Do you carry anything you don't need?

A little while back I found myself having to prop a door open and walk away from it for a few minutes. There was nothing laying around with which to prop it open. A quick scan of my pockets didn't find much that would work that I wouldn't mind walking away from. I settled on a pen that I really like, but only cost $1.79, so if it walked away I wouldn't be crushed. If I didn't have that pen with me, I don't know what I would have used, as I'm not going to walk away from a $20 pen, expensive knife, or other important item. Check your pockets right now, do you carry anything you don't need? Do you think you should? I know we like to carry so much stuff that we also try to minimize it, only carrying quality items that are likely to last, function, and cost a bit, so if you have to prop open a door or otherwise walk away from something, do you carry anything you don't need?

I only carry the basics that I'll get use out of daily. My usual attire is a pair of solid color Propper brand BDU pants and a polo shirt and a pair of GSG9s. My loadout is as such.
Around Neck- Keys/Backup knife
Front right pocket- cellphone
Front left pocket- Flashlight
Left rear- Colibri Quantum lighter
Right Rear- Money/Wallet

Left wrist- Watch

YES!...My wallet. With all the money that I spend on knives and shipping charges, my wallet has no money in it anyway...:D.:D.

We wear the same damn outfit.

I only carry a few things. Light is right keep it tight!

CQC6
Inova X5 in blue
Bell & Ross Hydro Challenger 11,100 meter divers watch
Wallet
Palm m505
REALLY small sprint PCS cellphone.

Edited for spelling

I keep matches and spare batteries in my bag, nothing to spare in my pockets exept some Listerine PocketPals. Not much good for blocking doors, but I often have an odd piece of string hanging about, could come in handy.

In my bag? Lots of "goodies" (18 lbs worth) - On my person? I'd take out my keys, take off the key fob (Made of 550 cord), and use that!
:)

I have emptied my pockets to a Domke "J-Series" belt bag...
In it, I carry :

A digital camera
A paper notebook
2 cross pens
2 Surefires
A bunch of keys with SOG crossgrip, ASP sapphire light and Spyderco ladybug
A palm m505
A Spyderco Endura neatly packed in Mike Sastre's neck sheath
My wallet
A coin purse
One Press pass

Hard to say if I use all of them at once, but better be safe than sorry! :D

Hey Bob. The "dream list" sure does look familiar. How about a "zero grind six"????????

Nah, can't be, CAN IT???????

Since the basic question here is "what do I carry that I could stand to loose
if need be" the answer is for me depending on the situation .........

Anywhere from Nothing to Whatever it takes.

For myself I've pared my daily carry down several pounds. So unlike
so many I don't carry ANYTHING I absolutely do not need everyday.
I don't need a cell phone (not many really do) I don't carry a pocket
computer etc. My carry is very, very basic. .........

one pocket knife , one multi tool , one bandana, one coin / credit card case,
one zippo pocket tape, one pill case , one pen, one walking cane. No wallet
as there is never any money in it anyway!!!

All of these things and my clothes make up the total poundage I carry into
the world everyday. My legs wouldn't have it any other way..........

Useless crap in my pockets:

A balisong- I hardly use it in circumstances when i actually need it, it is just fun.

AN expensive watch- Yeah, yeah, a timex is more accurate but a brietling is the sha-bing-bang-nizlet!

And the usual- phone, pen, pencil, scrap paper, old reciepts, pocket lint.

Here is my only hint: I carry a few bobby pins all the time. It started because I occasionally wear a yarmulka (the little hat that jews wear), and I have found that they are incredibly useful. You can prop a heavy door open with just one of them, use them as tweezers, pick your nose or nails, anything you want!

Something that's always in my pocket I could use to prop open the door and walk away from??

That one's easy. My Chapstick, or my handkerchief, rolled up.

Hmmm...the only thing I'd be able to walk away from (that still makes a good door prop) is my pocket change. Otherwise, I carry a pretty essentialist load....now if I had my briefcase with me...that's another story...

Not too long ago I had to do just that, prop a door open, or I should say make sure the door didn't lock behind me so I could get back in. I looked around and didn't find anything suitable. I searched my pockets and came up with a piece of duct tape that I wraped around a tin full of other stuff that I carry with me. I used the tape to cover the door latch and was able to get back in when I came back.

To answer your quesiton, is there something that I don't need that I could walk away from? I suppose it depends on the situation. In most normal cases, no, I wouldn't leave anything I carry behind that had any kind of value to me.

I am constantly evaluating my carry items. Most people think I'm crazy to carry so much stuff. I don't seem to think that it's a lot, but darn it sure gets heavy with all that hardware sometimes:D

Interesting thread. I don't usually carry anything on me that I would choose to leave behind. Maybe I should pick up one of those little rubber wedge doorstops and throw it in my bag. I guess I could also drill a hole in it and wear it around my neck on a beaded chain. :D
