I see alot of pics posted of demascus blade knives, but I notice most (If not, all) of them don't appear used. They're all gorgeous, but don't look worn.

Anyways, I should be getting a custom 3-finger wharncliffe demascus custom pretty soon (Oh, the wait's KILLING me), & am wondering if many people use their demascus blade knives much.

If, by chance you do, please post some pics if you can. I'd sure apprecidate it, thanks.

According to my post in the running thread "What`s in your pockets?" this one is my current EDC:
Linerlock folder by Reiner Grösche, titanium frame and spring, snakewood scales, damascus bolsters, damascus blade. A pleasure to own, carry and ....USE!

Another user is my Heiko Dörr damascus fixed blade with steel bolsters and camel bone scales:

I love it!

And another damascus fixed blade user is my Karel "cosco" Koci knife with ebony bolster/guard and stag handle:

Next "cosco" made user is a scandi with lancacièr damascus blade (that`s what Steen Nielsen calls his damascus which he makes in a similar way as the ancient vikings made it), ebony bolster and butt cap and a beautiful oosik handle.

Two beauties I`ll never part with!

And the last one is the very 1st damascus bladed knife I got.
Made by forums member Murat Klein.
Damascus blade, damascus guard/bolster and damascus butt cap, oosik handle.
This one doesn`t get that many use because it`s a bit heavy to carry but it`s used from time to time, only.

Of course that`s also a knife to be proud of and definitely a keeper!

As you can see, all my damascus bladed knives get some serious use and there`s nothing to worry about!
They are cared for the same simple way as are all my other (mostly carbon steel) knives. Just whiped clean and dry and a drop of oil applied from time to time.
Simple and easy! :D

I EDC a case stockman with a raindrop damascus blade. It does a fine job on everything from opening mail to opening those hard plastic blister packs. Whittles wood and cuts cardboard with the best of them as well. All I've done maintenance wise is hit the edge with a white ceramic about once a week to keep it sharp.

Sorry for the bad pic...

i just recieved my Mcusta mc-1 today and i plan to use it, but only for light edc tasks. It is just to nice lookin. It'll probably go into the nice new display case until i need a fancy knife.

I got my only damascus bladed knife recently (MCusta), and have been carrying and using it. It is laminated VG-10, so I don't know if that disqualifies it from your survey.

Interesting thread. How do the damascus edges hold up compared to other steels? I would be interested in both comparisons to traditional carbon steels like 0-1 or 1095 as well as the newer high alloy varieties. Thanks.

I'm using this Burt Foster Personal:

And this Greg Lightfoot Companion:

The Lightfoot came from True North Knives, as did the photo.

RogerP - I love that Foster you have. If you ever grow tired of it ....

I use mine daily, although only lightly because the blade is coloured, and since the knifemaker is no more, it would be hard to refinish.
If I had one where refinishing was easy, or a stainless one (like the Mcusta's) I wouldn't hesitate to use it hard.
The pictures, BTW, are nearly always taken when the knife is new! This one is.

My Damascus knives are more 'affordable'... but I still won't carry the custom Buck 110 as anything but a show piece. The Kershaw Leek was quite a bargain at ~$70 - and a fine blade, too. While it shares the Alabama connection with my Bear MGC Damascus knives, it is far neater looking - they are 'boring'.

That's a good question & I'm curious about that, too. Other than looks, what's the advantage of a demascus steel blade, if any?

I have a Damascus blade for my small Sebenza and a Damascus Mnandi on order. These will be my new EDCs

Small Classic Damascus Sebenza EDC. It was new in these pics but it now has a few marks on the handle.

As far as I know, in my limited knowledge, there really isn't much advantage with a damascus blade, over much of the modern steels available today. Maybe in the past, there were points where certain types of damascus would offer a better blade, but I think that time is gone. While they are all certainly beautiful, there is definitely a wide range of quality, as far as edge-holding, and other characteristics. Some are carbon steel and nickel, which has rust problems, while others are too soft to hold a decent edge. But there are high quality ones out there that solve both of those problems, and do it with awesome-looking results.

I feel that the best compromise is a super-hard core of alloyed steel covered by a high contrast 'sandwich' of damascus, like William Henry is offering.

Or you could go for a cheaper, but still high quality Japanese 'sandwich' which uses VG-10 and a beautiful 15-layer damascus for the sides. Lots of folks are using this now.

I own an A. G. Russell lockback folder with the sandwich concept. The core is a harder carbon steel that holds a decent edge, and the sides are stainless random damascus with nice figuring. It also has nickel silver bolsters, and quince burl handles. That has seen a lot of use, but I don't have any pictures.

I EDC a Mcusta M33 Take, layered steel scales and blade w/VG10 core. Very satisfied with it. It's scary sharp and I've whittled beard hairs over and over with it. I haven't had the occasion to use it on anything substantial or use it on game yet, haven't had it that long. I bought the Mcusta MC-61D recently and like it alot too (fixed blade). It'll be my trout knife when spring happens. VG10 with hold the edge without a doubt. I stropped it lightly on a black hard Arkansas stone right after I got it....wow what an edge!

This Large Basketweave Damascus Sebenza I've used to cut cardboard and all sorts of other stuff. The cardboard put a few very fine scratches across the blade,
but you really need to look closely to see them. They don't show in this picture.

A larger image.

I only have three Damascus blades, a Maserin SS Damascus Spirit, I won on the Forums  (see ya can win) :D I carry this as an EDC.

And a David Winston Damascus Keyring knife.

Also I carry a 512 layer Parker Damascus, small Burnt Stag Coke Bottle Case. sorry no current pic and I'm not upto draggin' out the camera, (maybe later), (any one know the best way to photograph damascus?).
