Do You Ever Ask Yourself Why You Collect Knives?

This question often pops into my head and I end up getting into a conservation with myself about the topic. It's often a serious conversation and I go deep into thought about it. I've never came up with an answer, and I don't think I ever will.

So, does this question ever pop-up in your mind? What happens after that? Have you ever came up with an answer?

Because they combine function and beauty. They cut stuff, and look great even when they are not cutting stuff.

I have more than I need, but want more than I have!

When I hold a knife it feels right...the same feeling that every man before me had through out history, it's primal, a perfect combination of form and function.

Because knives are cheaper than guns. . . Generaly speaking. Id love to buy guns as frequently as I do knives but I cant hold on to money for too long:)

Well... Part of it is that in my part of the US, knives and watches are the main accepted accessories that a man can wear.

That plus I'm just an obsessive collector. Besides, I have enough knives that none of them ever get old. When I pull a knife out of my pocket to use, I usually spend a few seconds admiring it before I use it. Fondling them is half the fun :)

I find the designs interesting. I enjoy the quality manufacturing. They are useful. I like being able to carry on my person one of the objects that i collect...can't do that with motorcycles.;)

I dare not ask myself that question. I worry that, much like the protagonist in an H.P. Lovecraft story, if I dig too deep I may wish I hadn't. :D

Seriously, I've never really thought a whole lot about it. I've loved knives, guns, archery, etc. as far back as I can remember. Why ask why? Just enjoy it.

I do it because I appreciate a good blade. I love using knives whenever I can just because a good knife just makes me smile as it goes through whatever material that's in front of it. It has also gotten to a point where they're pieces of art as well as tools.

My ultimate justification is that if I ever want to get out of this hobby, I can get back a good chunk of my money that I've already dumped into it. Most other hobbies are not as forgiving.

Enjoying the beauty of the tool.
There is a vast variety of special knives for special occasions, so many different materials and solutions to problems.
Another important reason is "the people" behind the knife.

Yet, one day, they too will probably be illegal !!! <inappropriate emoticon removed> :thumbdn:

My thoughts exactly. Well said!

Because it's cheaper than collecting cars, more fun than collecting action figures, and more useful than collecting stamps. It provides a good cost/happiness ratio. You don't have to spend $50,000 to get a good knife, but when you carry a nice knife you feel like a million bucks. And nothing beats being the go-to guy whenever someone needs a package opened :D

Actually I was BSing about it with my buddy and the question was so intriguing I wrote an article that'll appear in Knife World maybe two issues down the road. Besides the plain fact of just liking them, I went into some of the other reasons that make knives interesting (at least to me). Absolute fun article to write and I hope also fun for the readers. We'll see.
