.... Does anybody buys knives just because they look amazing, but you never really use them? I mean when I go to the knife store and people ask me what kind of a knife do you need, I don't know what to say, I like all knives.

For example, I really like this knife, but the thing is I would have no use for it.

How many of you collect knives that you don't use for anything else but your collection and display.

Once again, I am new to this whole experience, don't hate me if I ask stupid questions

Being a collector, the vast majority of my knives will never be used. I have paid well over $1000 for a knife that I'll never use. It is not a knife, as much as it is art.

I was wondering when did you start collecting knives? How many do you own?
If I'm not asking too much

I think what you are trying to say is that you never know when you might need your knife? Am I right?

I haven't used any knife of mine that cost more than about $200, and never on hard targets. I mostly just check how sharp they are, then resharpen them. I get pretty upset when scratches, scuffs and tarnish shows up. I regret using my Cold Steel Magnum XII on banana trees. Of course it literally went through like nothing, but the sap clouded the blade. Now it's just a toy I keep in the drawer.

An honest question posed. Most of us do what we do because we DO! In short, we are all collectors, just some greater than others. Just keep on buying and sharpening!

I am a collector of fighting/self defense and sentry elimination pieces. They sit and look pretty but I love them to death. As much as I pay for some of them I certainly wouldn't use them.I always carry them but they only come out to be admired. If ever they were to come out for anything else it would be a dark day indeed.

Hiya Misko,
I rarely use the knives that I buy, especially the autos. I usually have a Spyderco Police Model clipped to my pocket these days, but that can change at anytime.

Just a note, since you're new to this forum.
I wouldn't post pics that are hosted at other people's sites too much. It slows 'em down. Everytime someone opens a link with a picture attached, the site that has the pic gets hit with all that extra traffic.
In general, it's a good idea to just post the URL (http://www.whatever.com) of the pic that you want folks to see. That way people can view it if they choose to.

Anyways, welcome to this neato place!

I think that we all buy a knife once in a while that we know we will never use. I have one of the Patern welded boker Applegate/Fairburn knives that I hope I never have to use. If I do it will probibly mean that the SHHTF. I bought it because I liked the patern in the blade and maybe oneday my grandson might make a little money on it.

I routinely buy or trade for knives that I won't use and/or don't like. But only when the deal is WAY TOO GOOD to pass up or I have a buyer for the piece I don't want.

If I used all the knives I buy, I would have stopped long ago.

Constantly.

I like to kep most of the knives that I buy in mint or near-mint condition in case my tastes/needs change and i want to trade or sell what I do have.

I do not, however, buy knives that I would not use.

All my knives are used and I own hundreds and some of them are very expensive. Most of them have never cut anything and newer will.
you have to define use. I didn't buy these knives to cut things with. i bought them to give me the pleasure of owning them. That's their use. A stamp collector doesn't have to lick a stamp and put it on an envelope for it to be used. The stamp is just being used in a different way. All knives aren't made to be used even though they all cut and all stamps aren't made to mail letters even though thay can do that if the owner wishes. The USE is determined by the owner.

I have lots of knives that I will never use
but bought because they were either a good
buy at a garage sale or flea market or they
interested me. My collection is a hodgepodge
of different types. One Samaurai sword,(a
reproduction, of course), one machete made
in El Salvadore with a very ornate leather
sheath and many pocket and fixed blade knives, most of which I do not use. I just
like knives.

About 20 of the knive I own ,I will carrry and use. The other 115 have never been touched by a stone and many still have the origional boxes.I buy and collect only the knives I like, I find almost all of my knives at blade shows, and some gun and knife shows.Me I have to handle a knife it has to feel right, unless it is a custom maker whose work I am familiar with,it's a hands on thing.

Nope. I use them all. Not that there are all that many. My entire inventory, other than kitchen knives, can be held in one hand. Usually, I carry a Leatherman ST, a Micra and a recently purchased Spyderco Delica, fully serrated. I am delighted with the Delica, but it isn't the best choice for all cutting chores. I'll probably pick up one in plain edge, or maybe an Endura. So I guess it's the slippery slope for me, too.

I have used all the knives (20) I have at least a little. Except the two I got in France last year an Opinal #8 and a handmade? G. David. These are keepsakes. I generally buy a knive because I like the looks and feel of it. Different materials, steel, etc. for variety. I plan on buying a nice fixed blade in the future and not using it. Something like a Randall
