Do you ever think about the ones that got away?

Allot of you guys, including myself, sell knives on the forum or whatever venue you choose. I know I am not the only one who gets attached or developes a relationship with their Steel. So do you ever wonder where they are or what they are doing?? How their edge is holding up, or there finish? I find myself wondering about quite a few of the knives I sold. How about you?? Don't you wish they could write home and tell you how they are doing? :D

I wonder that about the knives I've made and sold. Mostly, its a personal pride thing though. Wanting to make sure all my hard work is perfoming as intended for the valued customer. However, they are my "babies" too, want to know they (the knives) are well since I cannot help but get attached.

I think about the ones I kind of wish I'd kept like my old AFCK, the small and large Sebenzas, DDR Apogee, blue BM 940 (2), Blackwood small hunter, Busse NO, and then there's the ones I miss on the FS forums like Jamie's Matt Lamey camp knife that I saw in a picture last week and started to email him about--up for sale, and sold before I ever saw the post today (congratulations, Will!) The overtime shift that would have paid for most of it kept me from seeing it in time:(

I don't wonder what they're doing...just wish I had them, sometimes.
I say I'm not a collector, and get rid of anything not being used, but that's come back to haunt me several times now (see list above).
Fianlly giving in to the idea that sometimes it's not about need. It's about lust;)

I occasionally think about Spydies that I've either traded or sold off. Unfortunately, some of them had to be sold off in order to catch up on some overdue bills. :grumpy:

I hope that the individuals who have them now take care of them the way that I did.

I've been pretty fickle with my knives, so that once one goes, it winds up "out of sight, out of mind."

Only when I go over my spreadsheet of those coming and going do I see what I have had and get impressed over some of them; otherwise, I don't give it much mind. I also maintain photos of them somewhere on the hard drive.

I always hope that the ones I've sold that were just sitting in my drawer are now in full service, working hard. With the exception of a couple old slipjoints with major family/sentimental value, I hate the idea of letting knives sit around unused. I'm no collector, I'm into knives as tools.

When you talk about wondering what your old knives are up to now, I often wonder where my lost/stolen knives are. I can think of a lot of knives over the years that I grew attached to that then "walked off." A Victorinox Explorer that my grandfather gave me (stolen from my dorm in college), an Old Timer Middleman jack I'd traded for in middle school (stolen from my dorm in college), a Buck Squire my dad gave me (stolen from my gym locker in high school), a Case medium stockman that was one of the first non-junk knives I bought with my own money (stolen from my locker during high school football practice), a Victorinox Tinker (confiscated as I boarded a cruise ship - put 'em in your luggage, guys), and so on.

I used to sell knives I liked because I thought I needed some new knife more. The problem was the new one wasn't as nice as I thought it would be, so I regretted selling the other knife.

What I do now is wait when something new comes out until there's some feedback, and by that time I'm usually not so hot to get it anymore.

I also save up my allowance so hopefully I don't have to sell something to buy something new.

Now when I sell somthing I'm no longer that interested in it so I just hope it serves the buyer well and they are happy with it.

One problem will be when the Lum chinese comes back, I think it might be time to sell it, but when I hold it I still like it.

Nope, once I have sent them on their way I don't tend to think about them after that. If I see a picture of a similar knife to one that I have sold then it will bring back some memories, but I do not dwell on knives I no longer own.

I have made offers to buy back a few knives I've sold/traded - some even higher than what I valued initially - to no avail. Guess them like 'em as much or more than I do!

I also keep pics of everything that goes through my hands - seems to help with keeping "fond memories"...
