Do you ever wonder if 'something' could really happen?

I've been doing some pondering lately. Because of my job, I'm always out on the road and my mind thinks of some crazy stuff sometimes, but anyways....

I've been wondering about alot of inexplicable occurences that have been going on like the tsunami & earthquake in Indonesia, freak hailstorms here in the States, as well as severe floods. Hell, we even had 4-5" of snow in South Texas this past Christmas Eve!!

On top of natural disasters/occurences, we all have to deal with the possiblility of terrorist attacks here in the States--dirty bombs, chemical and/or biological weapons, even the horror if terrorists ever got a hold of a nuclear weapon....

I often wonder what would happen to society, as we know it, if the S*** really Hit The Fan. What would happen, if you woke up tomorrow and everything that you know, or have known is gone? Would people that labeled you as being 'paranoid' because of your interests in knives, guns, survival, etc., still be steadfast in their criticism?

I strongly believe that the majority, although maybe not all, of members here and other knife, gun, survival, and related forums would have some idea on how to 'survive, adapt, and overcome' this type of situation. Those who are not 'equipped to survive' will suffer the most if society was ever put in that situation.

I can only hope that I have prepared my wife and kids for life's hardships should society be cast back into the dark ages with no power, food, clothing, etc..

Sorry for the weird post, I hadn't realized how freakish it was until I read it.....can make a person think though, can't it?

You might want to have a look at the Wilderness & Survival Forum here at this website.

Thanks, Cougar. I was wondering if this might have been better being posted there....:D

Can you switch this thread over to that forum, Cougar...Ken?

Your wish is my command, sir. :D ;)

ALA KAZZAM!!! Off to Wilderness & Survival Forum!!!

shadow, good question! I think about this sort of thing everyday. and I laugh at how many city people, and sissies are gunna be in a world a hurt when something happens. I also pity the poor bastards who try to bomb the country, because there gunna have me, and every other hillbilly with a gun to deal with. if something where to happen, the first thing id do is get my guns and my survival bag and hit the woods, with my immediate family, and close friends. But if someone where invading and attacking, I would be trying to get together a militia from my neighborhood. everyone around here’s got at least one gun, so we would be ok. first day or so would be spent inside the town, if possible. resisting, while others gather supplies and men together this being priority. then we would divide up ammo, weapons, and men into small forces. small enough for their camps, and activities to go unnoticed, but still strong enough for guerilla attacks, and survival if discovered by a patrol.
The likelihood of the U.S. being invaded is so slim though. More likely we would be suicide bombed again. It is possible that they could bomb us and use the chaos to their advantage to invade. Something like EMP would ruin most of our defenses, and leave an opening for invasion. I doubt any terrorists can do this but Korea might be able to with a nuclear bomb. The blast and radiation would destroy a lot of cities, and the EMP blast that fallows would kill our defenses in the area, and also prevent us from telling the rest of the country because our communications would be gone. This would allow a faction to enter the blast area and get a formidable offense ready, and by the time we figured out what had happened they would be at or door, and ready. Again this would have to be a country with nuclear missiles and a large military, or lots of missiles and a small military. If they were the latter, chances are we wouldn’t be around for the attack. Bio-weapons would actually work even better. If you saw the TV mini-series “smallpox” that’s a reality, that could happen. If it were a world power, lets say Russia, it would have the chem. suits for their armies to protect them from the bio weapons, and the ability to launch bio weapons into the U.S.. basically the best way to survive an attack like that is to go into an isolated areas, and stay there. This is all very improbable unless it’s the end of the world, or ww3.

If you're gonna put together a minuteman brigade like they did on the Mexican border just recently, now is the time to do it. Fighting together takes some training, if for no other reason than to put everybody on the same page of tactics and get them in fighting condition.

Umm, I hate to be a monkey wrench in the gears, but the Mexican border has been open for decades with 1000s sneaking across every month. If you think about it, they've got one heck of an army here and we gladly hand them drivers licenses and the right to buy a weapon and all because they are cheap labor. What I'm getting at here I guess is that we really don't have a clue as to what dangers are already here. Up to and including nukes being stashed in what the terrorists would consider, key cities.

I stopped worrying about it, because it's more luck of the draw to be in a safe place when the SHTF, than it is by design, because none of us can even guess at what, when, who, where and how. Heck, with all this H*ml*nd stuff, I'm even eyeballin the G*v. Or, the camera's aren't really there and I'm just paranoid :footinmou

What will happen when the SHTF? The same thing that always has happened throuout history the survivors will pick up the pieces, bury the dead, and go on living. The trick is, to set up the odds before hand so that we will be in a good position after IT, whatever IT is, happens.
option A dig in, unless a nearby nuclear event bio attack etc requires leaving this will likely be the best choice for those of us who have prepared by stocking supplies, and hardening the residence. Secrecy is paramount and care to maintain sheeple camoflage will be necessary to avoid becomming targeted (by either foragers or the authorities).
Option B, Bug out: this only works if you have a place to bugout to. The highways, woods and parks will be crawling with lawlessness and the word anarchy will come in to true focus. The prepared individule will have made reciprocal agreements, with others of a like mind, so that they will have an established place to head if forced to evacuate.

A note; please remember Clinton in your prayers as the president who disasembled the last of the civil defense shelters and sent the supplies to the needy in other countries, thus assuring that in time of need we will be doing the starving.
Enjoy!

I'd say our own polluting and wasteful ways will kill us all off before there's ever some sort of widespread civil disorder. The multi national corporations would never allow some sort of disorder that would hurt our ability to consume and the gov't would send in the army before anyone had to defend themselves against the hoards.

I'd say something like the LA riots is about as close to that as we'll ever get.

Still the threat of something like that is great for business, so the multinationals like us to keep the idea circulating ;) The assault weapons ban and the Brady law were great to boost gun sales both before they went into effect and after the AWB sunset. Nothing like a threat to spur consumption. I think the grocers pay the weather people to predict blizzards to get everyone rushing to the store for groceries

happy joe, although barricading a house for an attack is good, because your in a familiar place. but a house or other civilian building isnt really a good place to be in an attack. first of its just hard to get out if they bomb you, or storm the building. secondly, a house just doesnt seem very defendable to me. many windows, thin walls, and its hard to use stealth to your advantage,(especially tying to escape). also can you imagine escaping a surrounded building?
id rather be in a forest with my ghillie and rifle. i have stealth, the element of suprise, unlimited escape routes, plenty of cover, and superior fire power in the fact that i have the time to be precise, and the first shot will not give me away, allowing me to move to a different hide, and start harrasing/engaging the enemy all over again. the best thing is i already have some sniper skills, tuned from hunting and paintball. you might think its funny that i think paintball and warfare are similar, but a paintball gun has extremely limited range, so your stalking, and camo has to be very good. i can stalk and elimanate people with a paintgun in under 100', and not get taken out, imagine what i can do with a scoped rifle from a distance? yes, sound is a factor, a high powered rifle is louder than any paintgun, but a paintgun is about as loud as a .22 so it will still give away my position.

Something happened to the tsunami victims this year....
Something happened to the California earthquake victims... and the Rodney King Riot victims.......
Something happened to Ted Bundy's victims....
Something happened to the Jews in WWII....

At some point something's gonna happen wherever you are, whether from economic breakdown (my pick of the lot), civil unrest, plague, asteroid or common thuggery.

The trick, when something happens, is to be someplace else. And if you can't be someplace else, be prepared to stick it out where you are. It's amazing what a little pre-planning and a low, unaggressive profile can accomplish.

As for the people who labeled me "Paranoid", well.... When they come knocking at my door and asking for my help, I hope they're willing to help tend my garden. If not they may be fertilizing it.

Good attitude Rainmaker. I feel the same. People can be part of the solution or part of the problem. Let them decide which one they want to be.

elvenbladesmith07; everyone will see this slightly differently, and an appropriate response will largely be determined by where you are and what everyone else will be doing. I agree that blending in is best (either into the crowd or into the woods), hopefully this will avoid direct attack. "Thin walls"... A house is not the best fort, agreed, but I don't intend to need a fort. My house is brick, lexan on all windows, (I'll be adding more to the outside as supplies become availiable). 1/4 " plate steel cored oak doors (woodworking is a hobby) appropriate locking mechanisms. This hardening is sufficient to deterr the casual looter/burgler. I am looking at drilling a well in the basement to assure continuous water supply. The key is to avoid being noticed, once you become a target you will have to bugout.
If bugout becomes necessary, my vehicles can go off road/cross country at speed (another hobby), there are several places, in different directions, that I can head and be certain of prepared welcome (People you can trust are essential to emotional well being IMO). I have also scoped out, pretty much, all of the legal (and illegal) 4wd and hiking opportunities within 200 miles and can be loaded within minutes. (Many of us can walk into the woods and disapear(another hobby))(This is way down on my list as there are more than 1,000,000 other people in colorado that will likely have the same idea, and many of them will have fewer scruples than I, and I don't like crowds.)
I do not believe total breakdown is likely but I have planned (and am preparing) staged responses for several potential disaster levels, including EOTWAWKI (another hobby).
Enjoy!

Happy Joe,
Where are you located in CO? I will be moving back to the Springs in July. Interested in sharen a little dirt time?

I've thought about the same thing. Here's my best guess if "something big" happens:

First, a few days of chaos. Financial institutions collapse. Product distribution collapses, groceries, fuel, etc. Bouts of serious violence, particularly among already marginal areas - like the L.A. riots, but multiple locations.

Then things settle back into the same old ****. The intelligent, well connected, assertive, yuppie-types that run the world today will be back in control. Then small governments are formed to perform basic services, perhaps like city-states. Then the small governments will merge and form partnerships, treaties, etc. etc.

Sure there'll be 'hiccups' along way, but in the end farmers will be growing food, soldiers will be the pawns of politicians, workers will work, stong-personality types will lead, private enterprises will trample everything in their path for financial gain... Really, just the same old **** again.

As far as 'survival' skills, well I'm glad I have some, but it won't matter much. Take an average person who can perform basic tasks at work, drive a car, read a book, and interact socially with others. They have the intelligence and motivation to learn physical survival in a very short amount of time. There's no other animal species as capable of adaptation as homo sapiens. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out how to throw rocks at rabbits, plant seeds, or build a lean-to.

My advantage will be to achieve a level of comfort before many others. Heck. I'll probably even like it. :D

RicBrannon; I'm just south of the springs in Widefield, (living a stone's throw from a primary nuclear strike zone (gotta make a few compromises in life)). We will likely be up on Mt. Baldy over the fourth of July.
Work takes too much time, but I'm sure we can get some woods running in this summer. When you get the details sorted out, we can setup a meeting.
Enjoy!

Hey, I know Widefield. Used to work on Ft. Carson. I'll be living up around G of G Rd and Centenial, by Agilent and the new Intel plant. Should be back in the Springs the first week of August. I'll let you know. Later.
