Being a knife nut I often look at non knife spending as " How many JK knives would that have paid for"

Last week, I caught up in that vehicle repair spiral. My old truck was not running right, so I took it out to my mechanic. He found a part in the computer that needed fixed and a leaky throttle body gasket. Well with the parts and labor, 187.00. But then he said,"better get that front end lined up, those front tires are wearing bad. So to the alignment shop I went. Idler arm was shot and the whole job turned out running 275.00. Since the front tires were so bad, I gritted my teeth and put on four new Ten ply tires. (3/4 ton) Pick-up. 450.00 bites the dust. Last but not least, the plates expire this month, another 65.00. I also had to put 62.00 worth of Gas in it.

I cry at how many GREAT JK's this would have bought.:mad:

I'll trade you trucks!
2 steer tires $750.00
Oil change $189.00
U-joint $95.00 for the part, $320.00 for the labor.
4 drive tires $760.00 and I will need the other 4 soon.
IRS highway heavy use tax $550.00
That was July.
So, every time I look here at what John has made lately, I think what I could have bought.

Unfortunately, neither does mine.:(

Must be like when I worked in town most of the year so I could afford to keep farming. I finally gave it up and let the neighbor farm it. I still have the place to hunt and someday the kids can decide what to do with it. I think there is oil in that area but the EPA and Liberals will never let any more drilling happen here. Gotta buy it from the Arabs.

Hmmmm, I may have to stop by and get the crap scared out of me by some Pheasants someday.

I have not been out to my place since last deer season. There were tons of turkey and Mule deer. There are more pheasants east of my area although they have increased everywhere in both Dakota's.

We might have another year left in Jamestown, depending on how this health care thing shakes out. My wife could retire this year unless we need to keep her insurance for a while yet. I can go to the VA but she can't.

Well I certainly hope you can do what you wish for the rest of your days. I love the Dakotas but it gets a little too chilly in the winter for me.
Judging by where you are in Jamestown, I bet we've passed a time or two. I was there often for several years.
How will you buy knives on a retired family's budget?

I am trying to get them bought before that. OR a part time job after the wife quits.

Maybe I can get a job as a pizza tester.:D We could raise a few horses if there was any money in it. We have a few registered mares.

I always think about purchases like this. I compare them to knives, guitars, amplifiers and exotic lumber.

It's a sickness.

I also compare prices the other way to justify a purchase. I'll say, "It's like going out to dinner three times, but I'll have a cool knife (amp, guitar, stack of lumber) to show for it, not just a larger waistline."

I played the guitar for about 40 years but my shoulder is so bad now that I can.'t get it raised up high enough to grip the neck. This has been a tough month money wise, it seems like everything that could go bad picked July to do it.

Jim, that's awful, both the shoulder as well as the money situation. Keep your chin up!

It is not all bad, One of the things that came up unexpectedly was taking the grand kids for a week before school starts. Their mother, our X daughter in law, decide to let us take them for a week and go down and see their dad, That was a great time even though it came up right between pay days. We left last Monday and got home last night.

The car and truck repairs were the down side of the whole deal, that took most of my savings account for repairs in one shot. So goes life, time to reload and take another run at things.:D
