Do you get attached to your knives?

I’ve always had a thing for knives, since I was 10 years old or thereabouts. Mostly slip joint traditional patterns, but some fixed blades too. When I was in school, I couldn’t carry a knife but as soon as I got off the bus I armed up, knife and BBgun. Now as an adult, you might see me without my pants but rarely without my gun and knife.

Mostly I like pocket knives of the stockman and Barlow and jack varieties. But I like about anything if it’s case or buck or schrade USA.

Knives aren’t just a way for me to cut what needs cutting, but a personal item. I build a relationship with a good knife, I admire it, show it off, hold it just because. Knives are my most treasured possessions.

Anyone else love their knives?

These are my two most cherished. A 75 pattern case 6.5 bonestag I dyed, and my late moms 709 Camillus half Congress.

Yes. I get attached to some of mine. Favorite patterns include the large (3 7/8 inch and larger, preferably larger), large sunfish, large moose, Barlow, "large" 3.625 inch canoe, 4 blade scout/camp/demo/engineer's knives, SAK's with scissors, saw, and multi purpose corkscrew, and similar size friction folders.
Makes it difficult at times to pick which one to carry. All but one or two of my knives are out of production - at least insofar as handle materials are concerned. The one or two that are still in production have gone up sufficiently in price I can't afford to replace them. The ones that are out of production are next door to impossible to find on the used market, and are out of my budget if found, to boot.
The GEC's I can understand ... but the Rough Riders?!?
I saw a recent video on You Tube last week, reviewing a Rough Rider RR857 Outdoorsman Series Smooth Tobacco Bone (large) sunfish. The guy said "I stole" off ebay for "ONLY" $60.⁰⁰ plus shipping".
I paid around $10 for mine ... including tax and shipping off the big river site, and around $12.⁰⁰ a couple years later at a truck stop in either SC or GA when I got a second (NOS blister pack?) for back-up if something happened to the first.
Who'da guessed Rough Rider would become a high price "collectable" like Case and Imperial-Schrade USA, selling for considerably more than the original retail? Certainly not me. I figured Rough Rider and related would depreciate and be "worth" a buck or two at best.
Heck, GEC/QUEEN/S&M "only" sell for 2 to 3x original retail, if you can find one. That rough Rider went for 6x the original retail, and the guy thought he got it "cheap"!
Admittedly, considerably fewer dollars than the GEC/QUEEN/S&M, but a much higher percentage profit.
No. I haven't checked the sold listings on eBay to see if they normally/actually sell for more than 6x the original retail. I'll never sell any of mine, so it don't really matter to me. 🤔😊

I definitely am. I have gone thru my collection looking for stuff to sell and there isn't anything I'm willing to part with.
When the time comes.. my knives will go to my granddaughter.
I often buy a knife of a new pattern to try, if I don’t like it I’ll sell or trade. Problem is I like too many patterns I reckon.

Some more than others but yes, there are a couple in my "collection" that I would lose sleep over if they were to go missing (and have done so). All of them are Traditionals which is why I lurk here for the most part. Im not big on safe queens but have a soft spot for users and love a good patina. Carbon blades and bone handles seem to be the ticket. I have a couple stainless/plastic HARD users that get abused more than my carbon/bone combos and one in particular has taken every bit of it and then some without fail. This has earned it an attachment that I dont have for others like it and if/when it fails I will mourn it and likely try to bring it back to life.

Okay, this is fascinating to me. It's perfectly logical! But for me, attachment won't stop me from selling a knife if I'm not carrying it often enough. I bet everyone draws that line in different places.

I'll try to explain where I'm coming from ...
For many years/decades I carried only the same one(1) knife every day, although that "one" might have changed only every decade and a half or so.
Looking at my collection of knives today, I COULD pick one knife to carry every day and get rid of all the others if push came to shove.
Thing is though, the one I chose to keep may not EVEN be my favorite, but would simply be the one I find to be most useful on a daily basis.
There are MANY knives in my collection I may only carry two or three times a year, but I would never get rid of them from lack of use.
I greatly enjoy handling and admiring ALL the knives I own regardless of carry and use frequency.
After a lifetime and 69yrs this year, I'll keep them ... and have no regrets now or down the road ... however far that may be.

Yepp!
I am also in to watches. Collecting, wearing, buying, selling and trading. There are some "keepers" in the collection that I will never part with, but most of them can be valued in some way. A nice trade or a good offer at the right time and so on.
But my knives stay put (except those I make with intent so sell or gift).

I have always had a love of all types of knives, from kitchen to fixed to folders. I love having something so useful and also cool to look at that i can carry with me throughout the days adventures. There are grails and beater knives, some more spendy than others, but I don't think i have a single knife that i wouldn't toss into my pocket and carry around for the day. I would say I am attached to them since once I am able to finally track one down that has caught my eye there's a very small chance it will ever leave the collection.
