Whenever I use a knife for any period of time, I always slip and slice my finger, or somehow cut myself unknowingly until I find spots of blood on whatever I am working on. I also find my thumbs and index fingers are covered in a multitude of shallow cuts and that my skin looks like it was peeled!

Do you guys get cuts?
How do you prevent them? Does it just come with more experience?

If anyone has photos feel free to post them

Ill start it off with this 'papercut' from my convexed Svord Peasant:

Always have great respect for sharp objects, with time the respect grows and you learn where not to put your hand or other body parts. You still slip every now and again but it does lessen as your experience grows.

When your knives are as sharp as I like to keep mine it makes you take a extra level of caution too. Because you know even a small slip can result in a trip to the ER.

I rarely get cut when I'm cutting. I did get a bad cut while cleaning my Spyderco Dragonfly with a q-tip and the q-tip snapped and my fingers jammed into the factory edge serrations.

I also cut myself with a lock-back while unlocking it with one hand and letting the blade drop. I don't know why I did it at the time but I unlocked it tip up with a finger in the way and the blade just dropped down on my finger. Haha stupid me.

How would I prevent it? Well I learned the hard way. Get cut first then you'll have a slightly different view on handling the knife. I agree 100% with knifenut1013 as well.

But for those who haven't cut themselves yet, there are many specific ways to hold things just in case your knife slips out. Don't get careless and blank out when you're doing repetitive cutting. Keep your focus and keep track of whats going on!

Don't feel like you're the only clumsy one. Hope your cut heals up soon. Use Aloe Vera !!

Cut only away from your body and it's parts, never towards. It's a simple rule, but it's kept me from getting cut after the last time (which was bad) when using edged tools.

I assume that almost all knife enthusiasts cut themselves at least occasionally. All those hours fondling/using your treasured knives and it only takes a second of inattention to draw blood. I don't cut myself as much as I used to, but it still happens from time to time. Now that I don't do really stupid things with knives (i.e. hacking at a movie ticket while holding it with my bare hand when I was fifteen, which resulted in five stitches) the cuts are very minor.

I have cut myself while sharpening or cleaning a blade as well as once while adding loctite and tightening the scales. But I can't remember the last time I cut myself while using a knife to cut stuff - more a case of technique while cutting than anything else, try to keep your fingers out of the way of the sharp edge of the blade.

Very rarely - last time was when my ZT 0500 MUDD opened in my pocket. It bit me pretty good.

If the knife only allows tip up carry I try to make it so the blade is against the seam side of my pocket.

I try not to make the knife do more than it was designed to do.

I also do not use my knives as worry beads, so it lessens the chance for mishaps.

I get cuts all the time, almost always (*knock on wood*) small ones. Almost always from opening or closing my knives rather than slipping or doing something dense while cutting something...

Unlike some of you nutjobs, though, my first instinct is to apply First Aid, not reach for the camera. :p

When I first started woodcarving I would get litte cuts alot. Not deep enough to bleed but you could see them in the pad. Eventually as the skin healed over and calloused I dont get them anymore. My right thumb has a quite tough pad now. This is the only situation I cut toward myself though.

I get small cuts all the time. Maybe 10% of them are from knives, the rest from the environment. The world has a lot of rough spots and sharp corners, the discovery of which can lead to minor or major blood loss. At least with my knives, I know where the sharp part is. ;)

I've been cut by just about every knife I own. There are a couple that haven't gotten me yet, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time.

A knife is never truly yours until it tastes your blood.

Rarely. After a few cuts early on, I learned my lessons on safe handling of knives and proper cutting techniques. There is a time to rush and a time not to rush things, don't rush when using knives.

At least you helping stimulate the economy by buying band-aids and triple antibiotic cream!

I've gotten cut dozens of times by various tools. The more you do the greater the odds are you'll slip up. Develop habits of working with knives, cutting away from yourself and that will help.

Sure, I've cut myself many many times. Even stabbed myself a few times as well. :o

Most of the time it happens because I was playing with the knife, or doing something stupid, rather than engaging in propper "normal" knife use. Can't help it, I like balisongs, throwing knives, as well as flipping and swinging around large blades like bowies, kukris, machetes and swords. ....just because it's fun, and it makes me happy. :)

And we all know that if you play with knives you should expect to loose blood, that's just how it goes.

I've had a few wounds that were pretty bad, but the one that got me the worst was the time I dropped a large and freakishly sharp bowie knife, and it somehow landed on the back of my ankle.....

...I've shown this pic (as well as pics of the still open wound) plenty of times before, but I figure it's a good reminder of what can happen if you're not careful, so here it is again.....

....went right through my achilles tendon! This sucked big time, and the medical bills for this were just under $20,000 ....luckily my insurance isn't bad, so most of that was covered.

Just try to be more careful than my dumb ass! :foot:
