When you could carry sharp objects, including pocket knives, on
a plane? For me it must have been maybe 20 years ago or so... so
that puts it back in the late 80s/early 90s. I was boarding a plane
and the metal detector went off. The security guard asked me to
empty my pockets. I took out my old Sog Sogwinder, opened it
with one hand right in front of him. He looked at it briefly and said,
"OK" and told me to proceed.

Today that would land me on the NO FLY LIST. Today, you can't
even bring nail clippers!

I think that all this increased security has maybe lead some of us
to forget how much more knife friendly the Country/World was
pre 9/11. Do you guys remember that time and have similar stories?

I remember when it wasn't a big deal to carry a small folder on a plane back in early
1990's.

I remember setting of the alarm wearing my Gerber Touche belt buckle knife...
I took it out, showed security and they said, "Go ahead, Sir"...wore it on the plane...

I carried a Buck 301 everywhere I flew in the '90's and never had any problems.

Yeah, I remember.
I also remember when, as a student; we could carry knives to school and not be considered a "dangerous 10 year old" or whatever age fits. ;)
We have come a long way haven't we. lol .... :thumbdn: :D

It seemed that every week or so there would be a thread on what knife to carry on a plane with the Deiica the usual favorite.

I recall. I used to have a lot more freedom. Terrorism works, those guys changed us forever.

I am not trying to start anything by saying that...Just an observation that there was a result from their actions. I will also say that given a choice, I would prohibit the carry of knives on board too if I was in charge.

Yep, hell you could carry a firearm for that matter. Maybe you were not supposed to but there was no baggage inspection and no metal detectors, you just walked or climbed onto the plane.

Anyone remember if you could carry on your hunting rifles?

Really?! Man, when was that?

I guess my timeline is about right, ppl are saying around the early 90s.

It's a shame now how many restrictions are placed on the whole world
cause of terrorism/terrorists. Shoes gotta come off, belts gotta come
off, bottles gotta be thrown out... Hell you can't even board with a
sandwich... A SANDWICH!

You can't board with a bottle of water over 4oz anymore. Times have changed. I remember when I was about 5 I flew to Disneyland and was able to go in the cockpit and talk with the pilot.
In my short life so far I've seen a huge change, I can only imagine what the change is like to you old times.

Just recently I flew several airlines and through three different screenings with a leatherman micro attached to my keychain, thinking nothing of it. Coming back from the west coast though, they inspected and searched, and said, after opening the thing with the little 1.8 inch blade, "You can't carry this, because of this knife blade." On one of the previous flights, the flight attendant was trying to cut some duck tape to fix something, and I offered the scissors portion of the thing to her to use. She thought it was cute, and showed it around to everyone.

Luckily they don't cost that much, but it aggravates me as to where all the "confiscated" items go from the airport bin...probably in someone's pocket?

Take it easy,

GMC

wow no kidding. craziest thing is, i remember just the year before 9/11 i brought two machetes on the plane in my carry on. Bought them in Nicaragua, one was an 18'' the other somewhere like 27''. Flew all the way home with them stored overhead. Nobody even thought to look twice at em as a danger. still got the things to this day, right next to me at the moment actually

Same here. I was about that age when my aunt and uncle flew to Europe and my parents and brother & I went on the plane to see them off. A stewardess asked if I wanted to see the cockpit and took me to talk to the captain, who gave me a souvenir pilot's wings pin.

My father gave up hunting in the 1980's and gave me his Remington 12 gauge repeater. I went up to the airline counter to take the gun back home and had a short talk with the check in girl. I was very concerned about placing the gun in with checked luggage.

Since the plane wasn't filled to capacity, they allowed me to take it on the plane. Since it was oversized for the overhead bin, they kept the gun up front by the galley for the flight, and handed it to me when I left the plane.

I carried my Spyderco Police on many flights until 9-11. Since then the world has really come 'unglued'.

I drive when I want to go somewhere now.I don't have a job that requires me to fly.True,I don't travel near as far anymore, but I have the freedom of taking what I want with me when I go.Not saying that I'll never fly again, just have'nt wanted to badly enough yet.
