ive made my final decision and im get a scrapyard dog father, and i dont know if it is to big for camping. And if i do get it it will replace my hatchet do you think the dog father is capable of batoning through good sive firewood and would it make a good cooking knife? and pics of your dog fathers would be cool so i can see how big they are because the pics on the scrapyard site make it seem like a sword lol.

It might be a little clumsy as a cooking knife, unless you have a whole hog on a spit.
But that gives you the opportunity to get another knife, which you would have to do anyway if you brought an axe.

No, not too big - if you like big knives. I personally do. It's a very capable tool if you like batoning through things. But it absolutely, positively, bloody sucks as a kitchen knife. Too heavy and unwieldy. But then, what's stopping you from bringing a smaller knife?

Cooking knife? What do you mean by this?

Regardless, a Dogfather backed up by a Victorinox Farmer or OHT, should be a great combo in the woods.

a knife that big would good for a chopper. i would not want to carry on my person, because that size of knife is a bit uncomfortable, and makes hard treking a lot harder. but if you go with a pack strap it to that. better there than rubbing on you body all day.
but i would like to have it to make a fire or shelter.

The DF is a great knife. It chops and batons really well. I have some vids showing this. I'd say, as others have already, back it up with a smaller knife for food prep and you are good to go.

Weight wise it feels really light to me but that is because I am used to a Busse FFBM.

Here is my old DF next to my Busse FFBM

Good luck. ;)

I can never tell if others are serious or not...

Cooking is usually part of the camping experience, hence a given knife's evaluation as a food prep and cooking tool...

Sorry if your question was something else...;)

If you're going to carry something as heavy as the Dogfather a little more wieght in the shape of a small fixed blade for food prep wont hurt

I think it would be fine for camping, try it out, everyone does things differently,
it may be work great for you, or it may not, only you can find out. It's big and thick for
food prep but it can do it.

I'd also suggest bringing/using a smaller knife, like a Mora, that's light and
very inexpensive and it's always a good idea to have extra.

I have done meal prep at the house with a combat grade FBM before. It works fine, slices tomatos paper thin and all that, the only thing is the talon/guard gets in the way of keeping the edge on the cutting board. I got around this by just keeping the cutting board near the end of the counter. As long as you're used to handling a blade of that size and weight it's not much different than a normal chefs knife, just not as nimble and potatos split instead of cut :).
