Do you have cold - numb hands?

Hey guys I wanted to shoot a little something your way. I finally got a chance today to use my Modular Handwarmer Pouch from Kifaru. It's a moderately priced item ($39 for standard, plus $6 for a neck stap if you like.) For those not familiar with Kifaru they are IMHO the ESEE of the outdoors soft goods world. The MHWP is designed to mount to any piece of web gear, but most usefully on a chest rig/pouch. It anchors on either end of 8 rows and has a top and bottom attachment points so it will attach at the corners of an 8x5 section of PALS. The neck strap allows it to be used on its own quite well. (I actually use the neck strap as a waist strap. It works better for me.) The fill is combat Climashield. This stuff warms up in seconds after you put your hands in.

I had to use it today because I layered up with a rain shell on the outside due to weather. There was no good place to put my hands. The shell's pockets are uninsulated and cold. My pants pockets are up under the rain shell and I don't want cause for more water to get on my legs or hands. So I strapped my MHWP around my waist, cinched it up and off I went. It hung at a comfortable level and both hands remained warm and dry for my survival trip to Bravo Pizza for my survival lunch. (The survival bubbles in the Coke were survivaltastick!)

Anyhow, its a great little piece of kit for cold weather and wanted to share it with you.

I'd say they're the "Busse of the outdoors soft goods world" since ESEE produces their own soft goods and both Kifaru and Busse are over-built and over-priced. They have great warranties and make great stuff, but ESEE has simpler designs and is much more reasonably priced.

Not to be argumentative. ;)

hahahaha!!! nice muff! i thought it was funny that dudes are carrying purses (versipacks), but a muff is just too much. :D in all seriousness, i feel for you. i had to spend a lot of time out in the cold lately and it was pretty miserable. if you would have offered this to me on one of those days, i might have taken you up on it. i think i'd rather invest in a good pair of warm gloves though, personally. ;)

In all honesty Kifaru's designs are relatively simple IMHO. Crazy is more Maxped's speed. Overpriced... it's hard to say, I really don't know the cost of in-house manufacturing in the US of A. Over-built... part of why I buy them, and Kifaru stands behind what they do.

Also I hate you and I'm burning your house down.

Seriously, not argumentative, you're just trying to keep it real. A diversity of perspective helps us do that.

Would this keep your hands warm in the snow? I'm thinking snowboarding and associated hanging out outside.

They do make great stuff, "over-built" may be the wrong term...

Bomb-proof.

what's the advantage of that over just waterproof, thick gloves? just curious since i've never seen anything like that except quarterbacks who need bare hands and taking off and on gloves over and over is just a pain.

JV3,

My hands get cold easily and I've found that very thick gloves do not often help. Secondly these were designed (not that I actually use them for such) for people who need to keep their hands warm and yet ready to 1) Shoot a bad man who is carrying a gun 2) Shoot Bambi's mother, who I really hope isn't carrying a gun. Plus if you really really have cold hands, I guess you could always wear gloves inside the hand warmer!

Adam

ah, yes hunters and leo for sure. i know the gloves i wear that's enough to keep my hands warm at 15 deg f the trigger finger won't even fit inside the guard...whereas even the thinnest gloves i own it significantly reduces the trigger feel it sucks when i'm using my long range guns.

That's pretty much why (if I recall correctly) Kifaru started making them. I am just finding it to be a nice outdoorsing (that's a word now) item. It is very warm and comfortable in there.
