I have a new knife which has not been sharpened or carried but the blade finish has been scuffed off at the tip due to the blade rubbing on the liner. Do I have to send $12.00 for return shipping when I send the knife in for warranty work?

Not sure, but I reckon that all postage costs should always be borne by the manufacturer if the knife is still under warranty.

if you want the knife back send the $12 unless ya have worked out other arrangements with EKI prior to shipping.

most companies are gonna want you to pay return shipping for any warranty work, its not just EKI, i do see the point though ya are trying to make.

I have sent knives to Benchmade and Buck and I did not have to send $12 for return shipping. It is not clear on the EKI website. EKI website says to send $12 for return shipping but it does not tell you who to address the check to.

you would address it to emerson.

i have sent back stuff to spyderco and BM and they have always wanted return shipping.

look guy, i aint gonna argue about this, send the knife in with no $$ and see what happens, i am trying to help ya not argue all night long about this/that, the fact is EKI requires ya to send it in unless ya make other arrangements prior to shipping it, have ya tried that?? call 'em and see WTF they say, i can assure you that the last time i sent in a BM for warranty workm they wanted the shipping because i discussed it on the phone with them, perhaps now they dont its been several yrs, why would i lie about this?

good luck with your knife, i hope it all works out for ya.

I have never been asked for return shipping from Spyderco or CRKT. I have no had to send to BM. If this is a warrenty issue, I think it is a crappy policy to make the customer pay to get his knife back. On a finish wear issue like the poster described, I am not sure where they stand. All I know is, if I had a knife that was not right from the factory and they wanted $12 AND for me to pay shipping to them, I would be a little pissed. If that is the policy, I don't like it.

I just got a CQC-8 and if I had to return it because it had a problem, I wouldn't be happy about them wanting me to pay shipping both ways. In fact, I wouldn't buy another knife from a company that acted that way.

well i have if that bothers ya sorry lol..

if ya dont wanna pay the $$ then i suggest ya do what i said above and call them about it.

is it fair?? not in my opinion on warranty stuff but i dont run EKI, sad to say.

If they can't pay 12$ for their customers then they are not worth my attention. That really is a stupid policy though I don't know if any of the mentioned companies insists on paying the shipping costs.

I recently had a custom maker ask me to include $10.00 for return shipping for a repair. (I'd requested some tweaking to the Kydex sheath for a better fit.)

EKI informed me that you don't have to pay the $12 if it's a manufacture defect.

that makes sense. I thought they charged you either way. If you are just returning your knife to have the scratches polished out or whatever, why should they have to pay for the shipping? It is not like they are making all that much cash on each knife. $12 can add up pretty fast. Some poeple might send the same knife in a few times and there goes any profit you made on that knife. It is one thing if there is a problem caused by poor QC. If that is the case, they should pay return shipping every time.

Knife people can be very anal. I have heard a lot of them talk about buying new knives and returning them for things as minor as a clip not tight or a Spyderco hole was too sharp! These people will actually box up a knife and send it back rather than spend the two miniuts fixing the problem themselves.

When I buy a knife that costs $100 or less, I don't expect perfection. I expect it to be put together well but I am aware there may be a few burrs or imperfections. If you can't live with them, fix them. If you can't fix them, don't buy sub $100 knives.

When a company corrects a manufacture defect in a timely manner, I purchase more knives from that company. I have sent back knives to BM & Buck and received excellent service. I ended up purchasing a couple of more BMs & Bucks because I know they care about their customers. I sent in my cqc7 a few days ago. I'll keep you guys informed on what is going on.

Emerson backs their products. I'm planning to buy more Emersons. Their customer service is excellent!!!

I didn't have to sent the 12 bucks and EKI sent me a new knife with a blade that did not rub.
