Hi All

As I know better not to keep non stainless knife in a sheath, now is it true only for leather shethes, or other types like kydex or donno what else, fall under that restriction too? All of my Nimravuses are M2 & I use only one of them as usual, at home or when camping, others just resting

Well, keep I mean long term, when not used.

Although may nimraevus in ATS 34 I don't keep it in its sheath. However that is because it is on display in a china/knife cabinet. I do keep a 1095 warthog in its kydex sheath. it is covered with veggie oil and there has not been a problem with rusting yet.

You shouldn't have any prob with rust if you haven't scratched or removed the BT2 coating. Ive had a Bud Nealy Pesh-Kabz and Aikuchi for bout 3 years, both have always been stored in their sheath with no coating. Both were ATS-34 steel housed in the Nealy Kydex MCS ..No probs,no rust,stains,pitting..nothing.. I just traded for a Nimravus M2HS with the old sheath..Hate that new sheath they came out with..More like a camp/utility sheath than a concealed carry sheath.

Give the insides of the sheaths a shot of WD40 keep your blade lightly oiled and you won't have a problem.

I have an uncoated 145HS that I keep in the sheath I made for it (concealex) all the time. Only time I had a problem was when I was working outside in the rain for a few hours, and using the knife occasionally. I didn't get it completely dried off, and returned it to the sheath with some plant matter on the blade as well as rain. Hours later, I pulled it out to wash it off, and found a few spots of corrosion starting. However, before that, I had stored it in its sheath for up to 3 weeks without really oiling it, and it didn't corrode. YMMV.

Yes Gator I keep my Nimravus in a sheath - 24 hours a day, unless in use. I have an M-2 Cub I've removed the coating from. I carry it daily IWB in a custom Kydex sheath. Occassionally I lubricate with Marine Tuf-Cloth. As with Rockspyder the only rust problem I have had was when I did lawn work in the rain. IMO Kydex sheaths have changed the traditional rule against storing knives in sheaths.

Is it "Nimravuses" or "Nimravi". Anyway, I keep mine in the kydex all the time, but I do care for the blade if I abuse it in the elements.

Soft sheaths generally will retain/attract moisture causing rust if the knife is kept stored in them. Thermoplastics - Concealex or kydex - will not, so storing your knife in one of these sheaths should not be a problem if it is moisture free to begin with.

Hey Eric, email me and let me know how things are going.

Endura Duck,

Not to get off the subject, but where did you come up with that "pocket clip" for the Spyderco Endura in that photo posted here???

(MY Stainless Endura II didn't come with THAT cool pocket-clip.

Yap, that's what I meant

Endura - The one that I am using is quite scratched. That BT2 coatiing is too hmm, how to say, sensitive or scratchable? I doubt it'll stay intact under any use, except envelope opening

BTW, Benchmade claims even when it wears off teflon will be still in pores to protect the metal. Donno how true that is but I try keep my blades oiled ot tuffclothed

Cooper - Honestly I don't know if it's Nimravi or Nimravuses

Would be interesting to know

Hey Mike....

I agree with you on leather or cordura (soft) sheaths.
Concealex/Kydex breaks these rules about moisture retention...

The Only Time this remains true is when a Synthetic sheath is lined with some other material such as leather ect.

I've explain this to many people who want me to line a sheath with another material.

This is only one of several reasons I won't line my sheaths with Anything.

Mike being a fellow sheathmaker I think you know where I'm coming from on this....

Glockman:

You can obtain a clip like the one on my Endura II this way.

1. Buy Older metal handled Civilian.
2.Break older metal handled civilian.
3. Curse your soul for being so careless shout curses at the earth. (optional)
4.Remove pocket clip from Civilian and trim rubber off with razor.

Violla...Instant custom pocket clip.

(although abit expensive)

I keep my M-2 Cub in the sheath 24/7 and no corrosion probs yet.

I think the plural form of Nimravus is Nimravii. I could be wrong, but I've seen this spelling someplace before, I wish I could remember where

Eric,

We're definitely on the same page - lininig a thermoplastic sheath with anything takes away one of the many advantages these materials have.
