Do You Like and Carry the YOJUMBO??

Hey all.

I have been looking at some new Spyderco knives the past few days to see what would make a good model to change from my standard Endura. It is going to be a daily carry knife.

One of the models I happened upon that has really caught my eye is the YOJUMBO in all black. I didn’t like the looks at first, but the more I look at it and see videos of it, the more interested I am in it. It’s certainly much different than most everything else out there. It also looks like it would be well suited for most chores we use our daily carry knives for….especially the heavier cutting chores.

So, I thought I’d ask you all and get your thoughts on it. Anyone carry the YOJUMBO every day?
Have you come across any negatives to using this knife as your daily carry knife?

One other thing. I came upon a video on YouTube where a knife guy is showing off the MODS that he does on the YOJUMBO for those that want it tweaked a bit. I can’t recall his name, but he turns it into a very nice looking knife. I think it looks better. Don’t know if I’d get it done should I get one, but I would certainly consider it.

Any info or suggestions you care to give in this knife will be appreciated! Thanks for your time.

BD.

That's probably BJ Hill. His mods do look awesome!

I previously owned but sold a Yojumbo, which I never carried, because I felt that it was "too large" and unweildy to use as a SD weapon and based on my opinion that the Yojimbo2 is a better implementation of Michael Yanich's design and, for that reason, the better knife to own/carry.

I don"t feel a need for a SD knife (famous last words :) ). Also I don't like black G10 and the handle looks too much like a bat-wing. OTOH, I do like large knives and I like the blade.

I do carry my yojumbo daily ( for periods of weeks) i don't think it's too big. I did modify the handle because the handle was not really compatible with my XL hands. I filed down one of the g10 humps with a small file and sanded it under water. Now the handle is great. Very usefull blade. I really like wharncliff blades. Heave blade opens with a strong "thwak". Put a low carry belt clip on it, like it a lot. I'm a pretty big guy 6'3" so the knife isn't to big for my taste but it's not a subtle knife when you have to pull it out to use in public. Cuts like a laser. The handle might need some modification to work for you. One of the smoothest openers i have due to blade mass.

I love it. Don’t care for it’s SD use, but am a fan of Wharnies and hollow grinds. Reg. customization, I do recommend the 5x5 clip.

I hate the handle on the Yojumbo. Between the arbitrary ergonomics and the extra coarse peel ply texturing, it's a bit like holding a fistful of driveway gravel. There's a reason so many people are doing skinny mods.

I also don't think very highly of the Yojumbo for its intended purpose, and believe there are other models in Spyderco's catalog (Native Chief for example) which are far superior in that role. It's an inefficient design that takes up massive amounts of pocket space and has limited utility due to its blade shape.
