Do you loctite your XM-18 pivot?

Hey BF,

I'm new when it comes to XM-18. I do notice that if I flip my XM-18 a lot, the pivot does loosen, not a lot but slowly and steadily. Has anybody had a pivot loosen on them while hard using there XM-18? I'm not sure what is the exact purpose of have not a fixed side of the pivots. Does the hinderer pivot have a specific name? Is its function suppose to have any improvements over a standard pivot?

Thanks,

The Hinderer pivot is proprietary. Honestly I think it's a way for them to get more money out of their customers. They could have just included another flat head side.

I use a very lil bit of blue 242 loctite on a couple of the upper threads...that way its easy to loosen when you want to but prevents it from loosening thru use and flipping.

No I do not. The hinderer pivot screw is much longer as compared to other knives, thus making loctite unnecessary. But I have only two xm-18s so my experience is quite limited.

Depends on the specific knife. I have some that come loose pretty quickly, some that have no loctite at all and don't loosen no matter how many times I flip them.

Great suggestions so far! Thank you. I think I may try just a small tad of 242 on the upper threads. For me, I just worry that if a pivot that comes loose during some harder usage, the changed angles could possibly be cause additional, and preventable wear on the knife. Interested to see the difference experiences with the XM-18 pivot system. Any clue why some don't loosen when flipping and others do?

I use PTFE tape. It's the same stuff used for pipe threads and is sometimes called "plumber's tape". Blue roll with a white lid. It comes in a thin variety too. I just wrap some around the threads-- on most of my knives really-- and screw em in. I haven't touched loctite in many moons thanks to this stuff. Works great too!

The only time I have noticed a Hinderer Pivot come loose is after I have taken it apart for the first time. Now any time I take mine apart I do a small amount of blue loctite on the last couple of threads, like others have mentioned above. Since doing this I have never had one come loose.

Which XM-18 do you have?

I put loctite on my XM-24 once. After I dissembled it a while after I never bothered again. It does loosen slightly after a while, but I can tighten it with just my thumbnail.

I have the DLC coated, no choil DLT exclusive.

This is what I would do too..

I know this is an old thread ..... I used the search feature rather than get smacked for staring a new thread asking if XM-18 users apply Blue Loctite :)

I just got a Gen 6 3.5 XM-18 and although it doesn't flip as good as my ZT0562 I find myself flipping it while I'm watching TV and it
definitely loosens up and the blade centering goes to the show side. I tighten it snug and it goes back to perfect. I'll Loctite mine tomorrow.

No i just hold one side of the spanner bit with my thumb nail and turn the presentation side flathead with my other thumb nail. Pretty much the same thing I do with my Emersons. I can feel when its getting loose.

Depends on the knife. I have some that require none and others that need it.

I’ve had some XMs over the years where the pivot would loosen with flipping. I recommend plumbers tape. I’ve gotten to where I pretty much always use that over loctite. And it works particularly well on Hinderer pivot screws, due to how long they are.
