Do you need anti-scale/decarb for 1084?

Do you need something like ATP-641 for a steel like 1084 which requires very little soak time? I’m using a knife kiln and plan on soaking for 5 minutes after the oven rebounds, so the knife might be in the oven for 7 or 8 minutes max.

No you don't necessarily "need" ATP for a steel that has a short hold time, just realize there WILL be a small measure of decarb that will need to be removed at the edge, about a few thousandths thick. Not much at all, but if at least that part isn't removed, the user will notice bad edge retention initially, and then it gets better after a few sharpen sessions as that layer gets sharpened through.
