Do you own a BK7 AND a BK9?

I will be placing an order for either a BK7 or a BK9 tomorrow. There is nowhere in my area that I can handle these and I am looking for input to decide which to purchase.

My main use will be one or two night camping trips where some walking/hiking is involved (will not be for constant walking backpacking trips).

Is the BK9 too big to lug around on your belt all day?

Besides size, are there any other outstanding pros or cons to either.

Thanks,

While the BK9 is heavier than the BK7, it is still comfortable to carry on your belt for extended durations. Both have the same style sheaths, which are very well made and the accessory pouch is a very thoughtful idea used to carry a sharpener, multi-tool, or maybe a large folder. While the 7 is a good chopper, the 9 is a much better adapted chopper due to the extra weight towards the tip of the blade. I think for your requirements, the 9 would be perfect.

Dexter is right about the BK9 being the better chopper, but I would go with the BK7 for weekend camping/hiking trips due to it's lighter weight. The BK7 is also easier to carry on your belt because it is shorter and dose not flop around as much. I find that the BK9 needs to be tied to my leg gunslinger style to keep it form moving around too much.

I also like the feel of the BK7's grip better because of the thinner blade stock.

If you team the BK7 up with a SAK or a multitool with a wood saw, you should be ready for any cutting chore you are likely to have on a weekend camping trip.

Maybe a good folding saw to substitute with the multi-tool?

I can see where Frank is going with the recommendation of the 7. Actually, either way you go you'll end up with great knives!

I don't THINK there is any way I could damage my 7 . . . I KNOW that there is nothing I could do to damage my 9! ;)
They are both easy to carry but if your wanna chopper the 9 is the best bet!

9 better if chopping major concern - 7 for all-round use & food prep - 9 easier to carry attached to pack due to length while 7 carries great on belt - both are great knives!!

You can't go wrong with the BK-7! I use it with a Surefire E2-elite! :D

Dexter, Frank, Jason, penguin, Big Target, Samo - THANKS FOR YOUR INPUT!

I now have a BK7 in my possession. Haven't actually used it yet but I have been fondling it all day. This thing feels great. It begs to be handled.

I was afraid maybe this would just be a shortened machete but it is most certainly not - it is a knife that is hefty. It feels good.

I think it is perfect size for my current needs. However, because this is so nice I know I will eventually have to get the 9 also.

Thanks guys,

I have the 7 as well and find it to be perfect for my hand and needs. For chopping I went with a khukuri, but know that I'll also end up with a 9 eventually. The wife likes the 7 but it doesn't feel right in her hand so am thinking about one of the other camillus fixed blade knives with a smaller grip to it for her. Sold on Camillus, that's for sure.
