Do you prefer Forums or Email Lists?

General question to those who participate in and/or run or moderate BOTH email lists (like the various YahooGroups) AND forums like this one:

I am considering starting a group/forum/list for people interested in a specific knife maker's knives. I anticipate that volume will be fairly low; may even go days with no traffic. Ability to post links and include picture attachments is important; Buying/selling/trading among members will presumably take place (not expected by the maker himself).

1) Which type of "community" would you prefer (email list or forum) to participate in for this?

2) If you own/run/moderate a group, which of the two is easier to run? Is a ubb-type forum time-consuming, difficult, or expensive (gasp!) to
run?

3) Main advantages and disadvantages to each type (or other types of "groups" if you are aware of them) for this type of application?

TIA

Matt

With Yahoo groups you can have it both ways. Your members can elect to read messages on the web, or receive them in mail. As a forum of course it isn't as flexible as real forum software though. Spam filters are becoming common. I hardly see spam any more. I wonder how much Internet bandwidth is being sucked up by spam that gets automatically chucked out!

Lists have the advantage that you don't have to "go anywhere" to see messages. Replies are also very convenient. Personally I like both, but I've managed and participated in mailing lists since before there was a WWW! There even used to be things called "conferencing systems" that were very similar to today's "forums" except that they were much more fluid and had many more features than forums have. They're all obsolete now because, besides email, browsers have become the only way people access the nets.
