Do you prefer your BM 42's plain or combo edged?

I just can't decide which type I want... what do you guys prefer?

Combo, definitely. The blade looks naked without it! Plus, it's nice to have the extra cutting power when needed.

I guess it depends on how you are going to use your knife. A serrated blade provides a more versatile edge and in my opinion has more aesthetic appeal than a straight blade. However, it will generally cut you a lot worse than a straight edge. The first time a got a good quality butterfly knife was about seven years ago when I purchased a BM 45 comboedge. I messed up on a manipulation (trying to do it too quickly) and rolled my thumb over the blade while it was still in the handle. Well, the blade rotated out of the handle and took a decent part of the side of my thumb with it. The fact that it was the serrated part that bit me made matters even worse as the cut was jagged and it was very difficult to stop the bleeding. So, if you only plan on manipulating your knife and not using it for any big cutting chores, I would go straight edge. After all, even the best of us get cut now and again, and my theory is that if you’re not getting cut occasionally, you’re not challenging yourself enough to improve to the next level. At least with a straight edge your blade-related injuries will be a lot less severe and you can get back to flipping more quickly.

got my BM 42BLK today - plain edge - its what i like but to each his own.....also my first one, so didnt know what to expect -one thing i thought the handles wouldnt be so sloppy, i guess they have to be loose for easy manipulation??? just a lot more side to side play than i expected from BM......

I used to have a 42s and I did not use the serrations so I removed them. I have found that a straigh edge works best for my purposes. A straight edge often lends more control to the user when needed for precision cutting. Serrations like to tear things up alot, besides, My Lady is unable to trim her cuticles with a serrated blade (theres nothing more heart warming to see than the woman in the car next to you picking her fingernails with a 9 1/2 inch knife:D ) I love my woman;) .

For looks, it’s gotta be plain for me. I just can’t seem to see the beauty in a combo blade.

Some people like them, some don't. I prefer no serations on my bali's, however, my Gerber Applegate combat folder has a combo edge, and thanks to the serations on it, the corner of my thumb is somewhat flatter:eek: thanks to a failed quick draw. Damn near made me pass out, but it was a good clean cut!

Oooh about 50% like serations and 50% like plain :o

I personally agree with the statement that the blade looks naked/bare when it doesn't have serations but then I also would probarly only use my new Bali solely for the purpose of manipulating.

I still can't decide, maybe I should flip a coin? :D

I personally have a plain bm42a. My jag on the other hand has serations and it hurts on a miss areal. I think the bm42 with the seration would look nice but I personally wouldt want it.:D

It's gotta be a plain edge for me. Comboedges aren't as clean and flowing. It's like adding rapids to a section of the Mississippi river, ya know? :D

Serrations are REALLY hard for me to look at on a Balisong. The comments regarding cutting prowess are correct, and I do think the partially serrated edge was a true innovation for an "Everyday Working Knife". I think they are UGLY.., on any knife, but I do use a rotation of several inexpensive folding knives with serrations daily. I [think].., if we tallied the older guys/girls, that have been around/used Balis a long time, their responses may be similar to mine?

I would personally never buy.., or carry, a Balisong with a serrated edge simply because it looks really "weird" to me to break up the classic lines of any Balisong with "squiggles" :)...but if you want a serrated "Jag".....it's "OK" with me.

NOTE: I also thought the "Hula-Hoop" was a terrible idea when I was a kid and wouldn't give up on that opinion until the "Frisbee" had sold 50-Bizzillion variations and the same inventor owned homes all over the world.., so my opinion is highly suspect.

When the..., "Oh God I Love Serrations" craze reaches a thread reading..., "Just got my PCC Custom Bowie serrated"....I'll reconsider. ;)

I just ordered my new BM42.... I went for the PLAIN EDGE in the end... my dad also agreed serations looked weird on a knife like that :)

I always carry a BM42as and a BM42a. Dilema resolved. :) I keep the 42as on my right, as it's more versitle (and I'm right handed). Have there evere been any production balis with full-serration? Now THAT I'd like to see.

I like the 42s for EDC because of the extra cutting power. If I was going to just use it for manipulation I would go with the 42, I like the way it looks better without the serations. The lines are a bit cleaner.
