see lots of mention of survival manuals and other wss related books/magazines.
i read lots and typically carry something to read when overniting.
just wondered if ya'll carry reading material? books, magazines, just wilderness type material? fiction? do you pick reading material based on weight in yr pack? just wondering out loud....
survival content: reading can take yr mind of yr predicament after ya have yrself set up safely. pages from books/magazines can be used to start fire...

I load my Android phone (Motorola Droid) with ebooks whenever I do any type of travelling (camping included). Lighter than a book and easy to read in a dark tent.

I always take a book (usually a mystery novel) on camping or packing trips. A good read with your morning coffee by the fire feels just right. Also, there's nothing better to have with you if you're tentbound due to the weather.

I will bring two small books.

One for pleasure reading. To take my mind off things.

Another book that contains survival skills.

Most of the time I'm dayhiking, but when out overnight...never.
I can read anytime. Outdoors, I want to go, do, and see things that I can't when at home. If dark comes before I'm ready to sleep, I'll play with a fire while thinking about what I did today, and hope to do tomorrow.

I usually have at least 3 books: a New Testament, some outdoor skills book to practice some skill, and a something fiction (especially outdoors related). I love to read, but I also know that there are more chances to read (at home), than there are chances to get out into the wilderness. So I don't want to waste an outdoor opportunity by reading all the time. But the NT is a good way to start the day and some relaxing reading is a great way to end the day.

+1 to me the best part of a day is sitting by the fire with a good book while drinking coffee

why?

if i'm out in the boonies i want to experience what's out there. take a hike, listen to the creek, watch critters, talk to other people out wherever i am, etc.

not the time or place for me to stick my nose in a book and ignore the world around me.

only exception is that my knot skills suck, so i have one if the sets of plastic cards that fan out as a cheat sheet for different knots. not really "reading material" tho.

I usually bring either a bible and a fiction novel (or sometimes just the fiction novel I hate to say). I love reading outside and find I can enjoy the outdoors just as much while I'm reading as when I'm chasing raccoons around the campfire or swimming on the sandbar in the river.

I am going hiking next weekend and will be bringing one of my copies of Eon by Greg Bear (best hard sci-fi ever written). I am about half way through right now and plan on finishing it up (again) around the campfire.

I usualy have at least one book with me. As per my habits it is usualy a book which makes me think.

I usually do have a book of sorts. However I rarely even look at it. I prefer to be doing things when I am out there. Books are for those days that we get stuck indoors for one reason or another. In the woods, there is plenty more to do, then read.

I have quite a few books loaded into my iPhone, using the Barnes and Noble application.
Even if I don't have internet connectivity, I can read the books.

IMO camping is the best setting for reading. Theres not much better than relaxing in the woods and getting into a good book, especially the classics

I bring a couple books along usually for in the tent. To much to do during daytime to read.

When I'm out in nature I like to read the ground, it's tracks and signs tell far more stories than any book you will find !;)

I am a compulsive reader. I am always reading something, and camping is no exception. I usually am toting a book along, but this summer I'll be trying the e reader I got as a Christmas gift.

i read a ton of books (mostly non-fiction) so i brought a book one time but ended up not reading it. every single time i start a camp fire i always end up just staring at it for hours and just thinking about things. i've noticed there are now cell signals where just a year or two ago it was nonexistent so whenever i take a water break i do check bladeforums.
