Another question for the BF population... When you get your hands on a "new old stock" or near mint head, do you take the time to soak it, sharpen it, then rehang it or just rehang it and leave the rust and buildup from years of sitting? I have a few bluegrass heads that are minty, and can't decide if I should hone them or leave them be. Also, what steps do you take after removing heads from a vinegar soak?

If they'll be hanging on a wall I'd just steel wool any of the minor rust off it, then Renn. Wax the whole thing and leave it as close to original as possible.

For a user, that's a different story.

Can renn wax be purchased in local stores, or does it have to be ordered offline?

Never seen it in a local store, but it's all over the 'net. It may seem expensive, but a little goes a long way! I've got a can that's only about 1/3 emptied and I've had it since 2003, I think! Works REALLY well, and it can be used to preserve everything from metals to leather. You can't even tell it's there after it hardens and you give it a little buff with a rag. I actually use it on the exposed tang edges of my carbon steel knives to keep sweat from getting at 'em.
