as the title states Do you shop at antique stores? I ask this because today I just bought a Outdoor Sportsman Scout for $18.90 and I think its a pretty good deal for a working man's knife made in the U.S.A, with its original sheath from the 50's.

not really. all the antique stores around me sell mostly furniture. on the rare occasion I have seen any knives worth owning, they are way to expensive. I usually stick to flea markets in the warmer months. that's where you find the occasional $5 spyderco :)

I mostly scout around for scythe stuff. I look for other tools and the like as well, but that's my primary target so to speak. I look for knives but only as a secondary thing as they're often in pretty rough shape or the price is too high.

I've looked around in antique stores in the past and never seen anything worth a darn. Much of it is overpriced by 10X considering the used and broken condition.

I love antique stores and thrift shops. I recently bought a Made in Guatemala 26" Collins machete with a tooled sheath and belt at the Salvation Army. I'm not sure of it's age but it looks old.

way too much, I stop by antique shops whenever I am on road trips, I usually manage to find the dumpy antique shops that have junk....I usually find some cool stuff, a lot of straight razors in decent condition for 10 bucks a lot of times, i rarely see any knives that are worth it though. There is one buck 119 at a local place, but the price is a bit steep, if I ever go there with the owner of the booth there, I will try to talk them down, as the date code put it at the mid or late 80s if i remember correctly

I have considered it and given it some thought but considering living in Texas about 99% of it is either worn out and broken Case/ Scherade blades

I shop antique stores/malls. Usually the knives (and axes) are too expensive, but sometimes I'm surprised. I bought a Walden Knife Co stabber jack , pre 1902, for $16, from a case right next to one asking $22 for an Imperial Kamp-King. Flea markets are sometimes more reasonable, and estate/garage sales vary fantastically. I keep browsing them all.

Too few and far between around here to be of much use....

Most of the "collectibles" shops are overpriced for what they have.

But I do peruse them from time to time, never know what you'll stumble across....

Yep. Same here. My wifes mom and dad were into antiques for years and had a store. They mainly dealt in furniture, glass, and books.

I do still check out the local pawn shops. They get some great stuff in, and it is usually priced fairly, and they will always dicker on price.

A lot of these responses are what I expected. Some people seem to think that a anitque store is the same as goodwill, at least where I live. But there is one place that sells a ton of old knives from pocket to military knives, at a reasonable price. I can see myself spending quite a lot of money their.

I go with my wife to a LOT of antique shops, flea markets and thrift shops. I think I found one seller that had some decent knives. I thought the prices were not not outrageous but he didn't have anything that I needed. I also collect watches and I think there was one antique mall we visited that had a seller with some decent watches.

I visit a lot of different shops, some antique, but mostly little gun shops out in the country. Just today I picked up a very lightly used orange mini grip for $25, and a benchmade/emerson colab cqc7 for 30 bucks. Actually I got my very first spyderco, which was a brand new Civilian CF for 75 bucks. They have some really good deals, or they just don't know what they have lol.

Yes, I do. And flea markets, second hand stores, and Estate auctions. I don't do yard sales because they rarely match my free time, and pawn shops tend to have more modern "tactical" blades (which to me says something about folks who tend to carry such knives). Here's a picture of one weekends haul from a few months ago:

I paid between $1 and $15 for any of these, and that includes 2 Schrades, a Case, 3 Imperials, a Iriquois, a Utica, and a Kent, plus a couple others. Cleaning up knives like this has taught me a fair amount about quality and construction.

Here are some of the beeter finds from the past 6 months:

1st, a Remington UMC Jack -

This is a Fight'n Rooster Gunstock Whittler; German made and tight as a bank vault -

Here's a John Primble marked Schrade, still in the box, a very hard to find knife -

And here's an old Queen Stockman in their beautiful Winterbottom bone -

I've bought a fair number of knives just checking out places; it's part of the fun of going someplace new. Yes, there's a fair number of overpriced (and in some cases fairly priced) blades hanging around, but there are bargains if you look.

If you're interest is in knives from the lat 20 years, or "tactical" folders, or purely custom blades, then you're going to be limited in what you find. But if you go looking with an open mind you'll find some neat stuff.

Quite a steal on that Belknap Old Timer! And it looks like the only knife you posted that wasn't used.

I am not positive that whas ment towards me.
If it whas I shop at pawn shops less for knives and more for tools I just check the knives
I have found a kabar dozier and a spyderco native FRN bolth brand new.

Used doesn't bother me. The Remington was so crusted over it wouldn't even open when I got it. I've carried and used the whittler and Queen (since cleaned and sharpened) and carry different knives pretty regularly. I do have a fair number of "unused" blades, but have several hundred more used ones.

9blades -
Nothing personal, and not aimed at anyone. Just an observation that pawn shop types tend to more modern type knives, antique shops towards slipjoints. You want to shop where you're most likely to find what interests you.

I don't shop second hand stores looking for new products.

There is or was a huge antique store repurposed out of a walmart vacated bldg. It was called the Brass Armadillo on the north end of loop 275 in Cincinnatti. I grabbed some nice english pearl and silver classic patterns for a very nice price, and made it a habit to check it out (free admittance) at least weekly.

I bought two old Schrades- an 825 and a 1040T- and saw dozens of other old Schrades/Camillus/Keen Kutter/Opinel/ etc in the antique section of a Florida flea market a few days ago.

I also bought a nice red Italian Stilleto.
