lowered the prices alot, or just put better steels in their knives and dropped prices just a wee bit.

I personally think that if prices dropped their sales would skyrocket.

yeah, but there profit margins would either shrink or dry up. i'm no business man, but I'm pertty sure companies need to make more money than they spend :p

You can have one or the other, generally speaking. If you want price points to drop, expect to see a downgrade in the materials they're using. Naturally, prices will increase if they start incorporating better quality stuff.

As much as I'd like to have something for nothing, it hardly ever works out that way.

I just think they'd be a lot more successful if they dropped their "look at our killer blades, how well they stab and cut through jeans, the perfect killing machine" marketing. Even if the knife is good, their marketing is considered ridiculous by many. I have a black rhino, its not a bad blade, but its kinda too big for me. Maybe it will make a good camp folder or something. But I don't look at it as anything "tactical."

I'm sure cold steel sells many more knives than you think. Just because they aren't popular on this website doesn't mean anything. This website represents a very small section of the knife buying market and most are much more picky than the average joe who is buying a knife.

I think the way that they market/demonstrate their knives by stabbing and slashing meat makes it more difficult for everyone that wants to carry a knife with no intention whatsoever with ever using it as a weapon. Their videos just help throw gas on the fire for those that would want to pass laws making it illegal to carry a knife. I have nothing against their products and I don't know anyone that works for Cold Steel but I wish they would market their knives as tools not as weapons.

That is the only thing cold steel makes. They are a marketing company, not a manufacturer.

And their buffoonish marketing works very well on their target audience.

Cold Steel is not the problem. The problem is the ignorant morons who fear inanimate objects and want to strangle our freedom. You cannot pander to their neuroses.
People should be able to carry knives as weapons if they want.

Amen to that.

Knives are one of mans oldest tools, its absurd how so many people would have them phased out entirely.

Some of their knives are reasonably priced, relative to the market.
But I'd agree many seem overpriced for what you get. I just picked up a couple of their better "custom" models that are being discontinued, at prices that seemed pretty resaonable....at $60 a Black Rhino seemed a pretty good deal.

CS has been doing business this way for a lot of years, and you kind of have to figure if their approach wasn't successful they would change it.

I think Lynn Thompson knows his market very well, and prices accordingly. He has been successful in a business that has seen such brands as Case, Gerber, and dozens of others fold or get bought up by their competition in the years Cold Steel's been around.

I don't find his prices to be expensive; quite the opposite. Those who don't want to pay retail can always buy direct from his "Special Projects" website.

His marketing obviously works; and if you have, or have ever wanted, one of his knives, it's worked on you.

The prices are in line for the market.

They have been in Business for a very long time so they must be doing something right. ;)

i dont know about you guys, but i personally love cold steel knives. i just think that the designs look cool, and most of their knives are unique and no other manufacturer comes close to some of the out there designs coming from cold steel.
but that being said, i do have to admit that i think their videos are pretty stupid, and i dont like how they put down other manufacturers. in my personal opinion, to each his own, dont gripe about people liking them or not liking them. just dont buy them if u dont like them

Allan45, if you dont mind, were was that Black Rhino sold for $60.00.

Thanks.

I have noticed that CS knives go pretty fast on the exchange, All the cold steel haters suck them up.

I dunno. You can find a Voyager around $40-60 most places. I"m not sure there is a better knife in that price range, with a better grip, better (and black) pocket clip, sturdier lock, and long-lasting,easy to sharpen steel than the Voyager. Yes, VG10 probably last longer, but it's not that much of a difference. And yes, I've owned Enduras and Delicas and Griptillians, all good knives. I think CS's AUS 8 steel is recognized as being a pretty good one, and their newer VG-1 is highly praised as being at least as good or better than the AUS 8.

Here you go. Hopefully, I will not get dinged for posting this as I did the first time around. :D

I just got mine on thursday, and am quite happy with it. If anything, it has a louder "Clack" than my Large Espada.
Really a nice knife for this new price. Unfortunately discontinued goes along with this price, so get it while the getting is good.
I am one who likes my knives razor sharp, and am quite used to sharpening a new knife "out of box" because they do not meet my expectations. This new Black Rhino came the way I like em, nothing required.

What cbxer55 said.:)

I also got a Spectre and Talwar due to the price. They arrived yesterday, all in perfect condition.

To stay somewhat on the OPs original point, while I liked these when I first saw them I did NOT buy them at the prices being asked at the time...so I guess that does mean I feel CS is a bit over priced. But at these prices I couldn't resist..even if I decide not to keep them they're awfully good tradeing material.

Many models are too large. I'd buy some if they were 2/3 the current size. I do like that they make weapons like push daggers, daggers, cullodens, kobuns, kukris, and many modern versions of various cultural knives.
