Do you think that taking my Native (S30V) to a mirror polish would screw up the laser etching? Its a pretty coarse finish so I'd had to work some sand paper first...

Does the etch have any depth to it? I have taken away superficial etching (where it’s basically just black on the blade, no depth that I can feel) with polishing, either partially or completely, but I don't mind as I don't like them there anyway.

If its a small enough area, you could try protecting it with some tape or mabe some super glue(?) before yousand/buff.

Laser etching is usually just surmarked--the heat from the laser chemically bonds a medium to the steel. It's only surface deep, so it will be susceptible to abrasion. Follow Jim L's advice.

Yup, it does seem to have no depth at all, just burnt on the very surface. Thats too bad...

Can't say I have the equipment to do that. Not really sure if its worth bothering with anyways, its only the factory Spyderco markings ("Golden Colorado, USA Earth" and "Spyderco, CPMS30V"). Though I do like the identification of the blade steel and the made in USA...

I bought the Wal-mart version of the native just for a beater in the boat. I did polish it and the etching comes right off.

It is now a Sterile blade Native, but it looks good. I had never polished S30V, I was surprised at how good it looked!

Did you go the sandpaper route to smooth out the machine marks? What grit did you take it up to? I only have wet/dry up to 400 right now gotta run to the hardware store and pick up some 800-2000 grit.
