I know the prices are high for a custom Knife. So I was wondering how many folks who buy custom knifes use them vs collect them.

I use some all the time, but also have those that are for collecting only.

I use some.
I do not think I would collect if I did not get the joy of using some of them.

Users:
Kit Carson Lockback. (today)
Kit/Jody Carson Damascus F4.
Scott Cook Lochsa.
Tony Huffman Whittler.
Bailey Bradshaw gunstock.
Richard Rogers coke bottle.
Darrel Ralph D/A Apogee.
Darrel Ralph Fixed Blade (forgot the model).
Fred P. Tribal Lagriff.
R. Vallotton Sidewinder.
Bob Dozier ? (older model that he does not make currently).

The rest are strictly safe queens. (for now;)).

BTW welcome to the forums Oliver! I hope you enjoy this place.

My best knives started out as users, and were then retired to lookers, as they became irreplaceable, both for monitary as well as sentimental reason's. My collecting started out as just getting what I envisioned as the best working knife at the time.

First let me say that the prices of custom knives are not high. Mine cost $125 with a great looking sheath. When you look at the amount of time the knifemaker spent, the cost of top quality materials, the equipment needed I think custom knives are a bargain. Of course some are works of art and can be very pricey.

I use my custom damascus fixed blade for hunting although I don't take the original sheath into the woods with me as I don't want to mar the leather. I take a nylon sheath which I don't have to worry about getting wet or scratching up.

Pic is attached.

Some knives can be very expensive like the one in this Ebay listing which is made by the most famous custom knifemaker R.W. (Bob) Loveless.

Of course I use my custom knives, for opening letters boxes, cutting open evil plastic packages. I'm not especially worried about scratches or anything, though plastic is pretty abrasive. We have a couple custom kitchen knives from Murray Carter, too, what's the point of collecting those. Just use 'em. I'm of the crowd that I don't care if people want to collect knives or not, those that say you have to use any knife you buy are stupid.

Kind of interesting on that Loveless- it has a starting bid of $2900, the guy is handling it with white gloves in the photos, but they'll ship it for $15???

Can't get too much shipping insurance for $15

Strange.

yeah, and I don't think $15 will get it shipped International Express Mail across two Prefectures in Japan, let alone all the way across an ocean...

I'm like Keith. There are ones that I'll buy with the intention of using one day, and others that I buy for the intention of collecting only.

Carry a small, bolstered, Crawford KFF and use it everyday......sheeple friendly and the best box cutter I ever had! ;) :D

I enjoy it so because I got it from my buddy Danbo and the asshat he got it from was banned for being a dick.....don't git much better!!!

I'm easing into using my Mayo TNT for envelope duty, but it's my first custom so still a bit gun shy.

Just a few of the customs I carry...

I had CD Childs make a cable damascus version of a cheap Taylor Aikuchi that sits on my belt when I can...

I got an Aloha Cowgirl from Audra that I've used on many a rascally steak... and they make for such a nice patina on the blade!! LOL!!!

I met Barry and Lynn Dawson at Blade West a few years ago and got a nice SS Damascus neck knife I carry most days...

Matt Cook made a copy of a hunting knife I wanted in S30V for use out here in the Northwest...

I also carry an Eric Berglund Pukko when I go out hiking... although now I have a nice bowie by Craig Cammerer that I may take instead occassionally...

So far, though, I haven't taken the Wheelers out for a rough-and-tumble... just not sure if they'd hold up... (Just kidding Nick - But I would worry about the finish!!! :D )

So, I guess I also have quite a few that ARE safe queens... :D

You can ship to England for less than $20 but that is with no insurance. I love to make knives that my customers will use. I want to make high performance using knives. I can understand not using some knives because of the price but I don't think mine are that high yet.Is there a price that puts a knife in a none using class and how high is it?

I use a small stag handled knife with a chainsaw damascus blade by Gaucho maker Jean Hugo Callegari most every day to prepare my packages for shipping and other indoor light tasks - this one was a gift. I also have a IMK (Flavio Ikoma former company) all-steel sheephorn that has beeen seeing use for over 9 years now and of course, a bunch of my knives around the home and shop.
As for the knives I like to make, lately I have been more and more interested in making strictly using knives. I love to hear a customer report about my knives and hate to think they may end up as safe queens, especially the last ones that are really using stuff. I even told a friend these days that the handle material I liked the most for my knives was duct tape! Ok, I exagerated a little... :D
