do you worry about blade length restrictions when in the woods?? here in NYS there is actually No legal length restriction.. But I;m close enought o other states that I often end up going there to play.. Conn for example says you cannot have a knife with a blade over 4 inches unless you are hunting or fishing with a lic.. It makes no mention of hiking or "woods bumming" Most of the time I use a sub 4 inch blade anyway, But lately I;ve been feeling a the heavy knives a bit... so my queston I guess is when in the woods do you respect local blade length restricitons.. or do you use the rationale that you are in the woods and acting responsibly so no-one will care?

Thanks

Good question, I would have to say although around my parts there are certain restrictions if ever I end up on a trail while hiking, I normally stash my knives in my pack and will often just have my multitool or swiss knife on me.

This is actually starting to worry me a bit because there has been more and more provincial police when I go to local spots i enjoy, actually got pulled over recently leaving a spot.. totally ruined the moment.

While camping in CT, you can have any length blade. Have you forgot Big Mike lives here. He usually has several knives on his person, all of which are well over 4". Hell, even his boot knife is over 4"

I will take any size knife or axe I feel like playing with. However, my belt knife will always be about 4". Just in case I feel like stopping at the store or what ever, but I have come to prefer a knife with a blade about 4" anyway.

And around here, that will pretty much some up my feeling as well.

Since MA has no length restriction, I am not concerned about it, however I tend to put larger blades in the pack when I know I will run into others on the trail. I still have a bout a 4 inch blade on the belt, but it tends to go unnoticed. Its one of those situations where I consider discretion to be the better part of valor. Also, I have come to attach longer blades to the back of my pack instead of the belt, it seems to disarm peoples nerves.

In Texas the maximum blade length is 5.5". I would be stunned if an LEO even thought about a bigger blade being out of place in the woods.

I don't worry about it. I do not, ever, leave a fixed blade on if I go into a store. People are too weird about it. Since when is a criminal going to advertise they will commit a crime? It seems silly to me that people visibly recoil if they see a knife, and they immediately think they are in danger. As a martial arts instructor I appreciate self defense mindedness, but profiling is not something most people are good at. Rant off, lol!

I dont much worry about it....My blades are usually 4in or under unless its a chete or Golok....

Hey cuphead,

What restrictions do you have?

Doc

nope. I dont worry. Regular citizens of the country known as Canada can legally carry sword length knives. Free & Sovereign individuals residing on the land mass know as Kanada can carry whatever they want, wherever they want.

On hikes deep in the woods I plan to carry my CS Trailmaster (9.5") and my soon to arrive CS Recon Scout (7.5"). I may not have them on my waist but they will be with me along with a host of other blades and an axe. With potential encounters with cougars, coyotes or bears, I just feel safer having blades of this magnitude on me. Plus, if I am in the unfortunate situation where I may get lost and need to build a shelter, forage for food, make a fire, etc, I do not want to rely on a small knife for this purpose. I guess that answers the question on whether I worry about blade size.

I don't. If i'm in the woods, fishing, hunting or whatever else i bring what i need and don't worry. If i were walking around town with a huge blade it would cause commotion probably but a knife in the woods i don't see a big issue. I tuck my knife sheath into my pocket because i walk to most of my locations, it's just easier to avoid conflict.

Nope, don't worry about it.

FL has no length restrictions, and unless you're in one of the major metro areas, no one looks twice at having a Ka-Bar sized knife on your hip in Wal*Mart. We're what Texas used to be.

Even when I did live in places with restrictions (CT, for example), I took whatever I wanted into the woods, and kept an axe in the car.

I do take it into consideration.
Most of my custom knives were made for me to be legal carry here, and my ESEE knives are of Texas legal blade length. One of my Swamp Rats and my Fehrman I have to put in the pack... they are a bit big.

I'm not spoiled.

Seems weird - you can pack a 20" golok/machete yet a 2.5" balisong or switchblade is illegal:confused:

i dont worry one bit. i carry a machete 18" on my hikes here...as well as my ~5" Koyote. Its always fun to flash it to the Green Harvest helicopters. :)

I dont worry about it at all, as long as your not acting like a wing-nut in Canada you wont have any trouble. I always carry either a 4 or 6 inch fixed blade on my belt in the woods. I dont carry like that when im not in the bush because I probably would be asked a few questions. But if I come back from a hunt and stop in at a store on the way home I dont take my knife off my belt and no body has ever givin me a second look.

Bushman5. One time while coming into Canada, Manitoba, the Border guy stacked crap on me for an hour because i had a big bowie knife in the truck. He finally let it go but what a hassle.

I never worry about knife blade length in ND or SD.

As far as I can tell from my states laws carrying a knife of any length blade openly is OK.

In reading the laws concerning concealed weapons any knife with a blade longer than 3.5 inches is considered a deadly weapon and could not be carried concealed. there seems to be a specific provision that would probably even exempt a bushcraft type knife from the law(see bold below)

You might actually have to prove it in court but most people carry a knife in the woods in the open anyway.

(3) "Knife" means an instrument, intended to be used or readily adaptable to be used as a weapon, consisting of a sharp-edged or sharp-pointed blade, usually made of steel, attached to a handle which is capable of inflicting cutting, stabbing or tearing wounds.

A pocket knife with a blade three and one-half inches or less in length, a hunting or fishing knife carried for hunting, fishing, sports or other recreational uses, or a knife designed for use as a tool or household implement shall not be included within the term "knife" as defined herein unless such knife is knowingly used or intended to be used to produce serious bodily injury or death.
