use your neck knife for utility or is it only for back up/SD? I'm narrowing my choice down to a couple and was wondering what your favorites are for utility. I've read oodles and gobs of archive threads on neck knives but few addressed what they were used for. Thanks.

I usually use my neck knives for about everything. The most I wear a neck knife is when I'm working around the house, or in the garage -- so when something needs done, I just grab and cut.

I carry a Neck Knife every day. The neckers I carry are the Simonich Crowfoot, Busse Assault Shaker and TOPS Nightchaser(Not all at the same time) :p . With the TOPS, the sheath was modified to remove the attached metal belt clip.
All these knives are good solid blades with the Crowfoot being the best slicer/cutter. Since I work in button down sport shirts and around folks, I find that the necker is the most carried but least used at work. Also if you wear shirs tucked in you will not find the neck knife particularly handy to get to in a hurry.
Generally in the office I will use a large sebbie carried in a belt sheath.

So to answer your question I would say Backup/SD.

I like to carry a small "shirtpocket" knife for light utility use, and a necker is a good choice for when I'm not wearing a shirt with pockets :) For that, I go with my Meerdink mini-hunter or the slightly larger Carson F4. I still have an Emerson La Griffe but don't carry it as much as the others.

The Assault Shaker is my favorite in the woods, where I can dig or pry or cut through whatever I like without worrying about damaging the blade. I don't see any of them as SD, though. Too small, often too hard to access. And I like them too much to get some creep's blood on them :D

... true neck knives but I found my Spyderco Clipit has been always handy. No need to sheath but if I must, I can hang it off of some loop or something on my jacket or pants. Some people think it is dangerous to hang it around a cord or chain around the neck so that must be the reason for neck knives.

Cheapies I have seen have been from CRKT and Cold Steel. If you go premium, there is quite a few out there and they get quite specialized. I won't even bother listing them unless you have a price range you are thinking of.

I guess it depends on what kind of utility you are using it for. On the MORE PROOF DVDs, Cold Steel was able to do all kinds of utility and self defense applications with their neck and key chain knives, which showed their versatility. I think they could fit the bill quite well conasidering their price.

I own about half a dozen neck knives, including a Tomey Thumbtac, a Dozier Razorback, and a Simonich mid-tech Crowfoot, but the one that gets the most carry is an RW Clark wharncliffe mini (actually more of a sheepsfoot). Strictly utility.

2 Emerson neck claws

one on the neck, the other in a pocket thats vacant anywhere, the boot, even withe the change pocket if necessary.

One is util but hardly used, I go for the SAK hiker in the pocket for general purposes usually.
The other strictly defense, but both can be used for that if necessary and actually would put a hurt on someone when one was weilding two handed with these.

Thats in addition to the Karambit as EDC, only for defense as well.
