Do your knives have "roles"?

I see a lot of people who have their one knife they use for everything. I remember those days.

I have a fairly established system for my knives - all of them fill a role that others do not, and there is no redundancy.

I have a:
- Main carry knife (Kizer 401B)
- Backup utility knife (carried with main carry) (Kershaw Echelon)
- Around-the-house knife (Cold Steel Tuff Lite)
- All-purpose beater/fun/camping knife (Cold Steel Warcraft Tanto; purchased about an hour ago)
- Backup main carry (Kizer 412A)
- Weatherproof dedicated always-in-backpack knife (Spyderco Pacific Salt)

I also have a vacant spot: Fancy shiny impress-people knife. It's a low priority.

Everything else falls into the fondle, trade, and sell category. What I carry changes depending on my finances and what kinda deals I can find - for example, I may be switching out one of the Kizers for a Mini Onslaught, and I might upgrade the Echelon to a Southard (allowing me to move the Echelon to the house knife role and give away the tuff lite).

Let's see if I can get them all in the right place.

Benchmade 531 for the office

2 Spyderco tenacious (one in the truck and one in the pack)

Spyderco Native for alternated edc

Black Alox Cadet for EDC

Protech TR4 or Spyderco PM2 when I want to feel like a bad ass :p

Mora Carbon and Opinel #8 in the utilty drawer/tool bag.

And a couple of fixed blades on my packs or in my truck (all Beckers)

Thanks, fun topic!

All my knives are basic EDC blades and I use them as such, no matter the cost of the individual.

The only time I may grab one over the other based on situation is if I want it to be a secondary defense tool, which isn't all that often honestly.
The other time is if I'm dressing up and need a more discrete and lighter knife.

That's about it.

Yes.

General purpose daily carry = SAK Alox Cadet
Home repair projects = Boker WharCom, Spyderco Delica
Food prep knife in lunch bag = Case Slimline Trapper SS
Box opening = Boker KeyCom

I have 3 dedicated work knives. Spyderco Assist, Benchmade Triage, and a Gerber Hinderer Rescue. Other than that my off duty carry has no rhyme or reason.

My knives not only have roles, I have it called out in my database: collector, edc, hunting, self defense, survival, utility.

Helps keep me from buying knives I don't have a real purpose for.

I have a big batch that I use for EDC weekdays.
I have several that I use for weekend carry.
I have a couple of multitools that I sometimes use for weekend carry.
I just got a Delica that I am trying to carry as a second knife, in case someone wants to borrow it, etc.
I have one knife that I have carried for hunting/fishing trips.
I have a Spyderco Mule that sits on my desk, and a Becker BK11 that hangs above my workbench.

Yep.

EDC - Al Mar Sere 2K /alternating with/ Cold Steel Recon 1 XL (clip point)
Woods/Camp Chopper - Busse Basic 9
