Do your neighbors know?

Do they know that next door:

there is a person who is working a material they created from ore dust?

there is a person making blades like those made for viking chiefs hundreds of years ago?

there is a person who understands the intimate workings of steels?

there is a person who creates complex machines to make they're work easier?

there is a person regularly works with materials that are 2000F and hotter?

there is a person who not only works with but understands and maintains machines and tools that are 100+ years old?

there is a person who is doing something that has not been done at the level it's being done for hundreds of years?

There is a person who is extremely focused and dedicated to what is still considered a lost or dead art?

Actually, yes.

My next-door neighbor is a dude I've known for ages; we've both been in bands in our region for years. Before he joined a band, he used to take pics for mine. He's not really into knives, but he understands why I am.

But that's a pretty weird coincidence; I understand your point. Many acquaintances have looked at me funny when I tell 'em I make knives... a very select few engineers and machinists have been genuinely interested... a couple of hardcore deer-hunters have bought knives from me.

But most people think it's a bit odd.

They sure do.;) I think its a dead giveaway when you see 30 to 40 people in my yard trying to cut rope and 2X4's with their knives. HEHEHEHEHEHE!!!

Yup.

My neighbor works with me once in a while and his brother spent 2 days in my shop when he was visiting home from NC. The local kids say "there's a guy who looks like Jesus who makes swords". And my one neighbor who is a very talented artist wants to do a painting of me working.

edit- Of course when I say neighbors I mean the people within 2 miles... its kinda rural out here.

Yes, my neighbors all know.

The ones closest think it's the coolest thing ever. They claim they're going to buy three knives soon... lol (that's gonna happen ;) ).

Sometimes the local cops even stop by to see what I'm working on because they think it's cool too.

Living in a town with somewhere around 1,000 - 1,300 people certainly has its benefits. :)

Damn I wish my shop was at my house! As it is, I have to hop in the car and drive to the edge of town to get to my shop. And the only neighbors out there are the prairie dogs (they probably know, but really don't care) and the mosquitos (they know, and boy do they care!!). Actually, the owner of the shop units is my wife's God father, but he's never shown a tremendous amount of interest in seeing what I do. He loves the knives, but hasn't stopped by the shop. The manager of the unit does stop by every once in a while to check out the goings on.

Word gets around quickly around here, and many of the neighbors own at least one of my knives, and a few have helped me sell more to their friends.
