Last weekend my Son & I went camping in Yosemite with his Indian Guides Troop. We had all types of weather from rain, snow & even a sunny spring type day.

I had packed several types of knives, but, the one I found myself constantely using was my Rucksack.

It cut rope in a flash to set up all the tarps. The blade is thin enough to make an excellent knife for slicing all type of food.

I used a knife a lot this weekend and found that this was the only knife I used. The blade is still sharp after all the use and due to the fact it was in my pocket the whole time it was the first knife I would reach for.

If I could only have one knife, it would be this one. Probally my least expensive knife gets the most use.

Throwing out extreme situations, this khife while do anything I need to have done while camping or backpacking.

What do you think?

Hi backpacker,

I'll "second" that, I have a SAK Hunter which is a Rucksack without can opener and instead a "semi-circular" gutting-blade with serrations.

I got from Eric Noeldchen (great guy

) an small Concealex or Kydex neck sheath for the SAK Rucksack and I find myself wearing the Hunter constantly so I always have it handy.

To be honest I also carry an Buck 110 Master series (BG42 blade) that I received as a present and that since receiving it has been on my belt

it is used for heavier cutting.

I always tell myself that a man needs 2 knives minimum

Get yourself that nice Rucksack Neck Sheath from Eric, you'll love it.

Bagheera,
That's the one I carry as well. Excellent knife and I use the gutting blade a lot. It's really a great small game knife for gutting although I like a knife with a really fine point on it for making initial cuts. I've found that the Dozier General Utility works great for that. But it's a minor point. The Rucksack and Hunter are both great SAKs. I also bought one of those small screwdrivers you slip into the corkscrew.

For me, the Leatherman Pulse and SAK Hunter make a great combo. I have a two-pouch belt sheath and during the summer, I've always carried a leatherman and SAK combo on my hip. This summer it will be an SAK Hunter and a Leatherman Pulse. With this combo, I could probably rebuild a D9 Caterpillar.

Still, if I had to choose one knife, it's likely to be a big multitool like the LM Supertool, the SwissTool or the SwissTool X. The Rucksack is hard to beat but the multitools just give you more options.

I remember years ago on a backpacking trip I was hiking with a friend of mine who was extremely inexperienced and was having a hard time shouldering his pack. Unfortunately he was somehow putting very heavy stress on the waistbelt and ripped it (To this day, I'm not sure how he did it.) Fortunately, I had an original leatherman with me, a heavy sewing needle, and some heavy waxed thread, the kind you sew leather with. With the pliers, I was able to force the needle (a three-cornered needle--don't leave home without one) through the heavy harness material and sew up his belt good as new. Those pliers are just too damn handy to do without (of course, if you watch Ron's video, you'll see he has a dandy way of using sewing awl needles). Anyway, my vote still goes for a multitool but the ruck or hunter has to be right up there. BTW, a small round piece of leather with a slice in it makes a nice addition to your minikit and can be used as a sewing "thimble").

No matter what knives I carry (Schrade LB7, Spyderco Rescue, Old Timer trapper, Ontario machete, Camillus pilot's survival knife, Gerber Pro-Scout, Case Peanut, ect, ect) it's always the SAK that gets the most use.
I've tried to not carry it for a week--I lasted 2 days!
I love my other knives but the SAKs are just TOO HANDY.

Now if they made a SAK with a clip, a Spyderco thumbhole, red zytel scales, and a liner-lock...

Now you're thinking! Spyderco and Victorinox should get together and make the ultimate one hand opening SAK with a clip!

I just purchased a Victorinox "Jumpmaster". I think it is built along the lines of the "Rucksack" mentioned above (large locking blade, can opener, bottle opener, gutting/seatbelt cutter blade, saw, phillips screwdriver, etc.) It has a dark green handle rather than red. The only place I've seen this model is sold through the military PX system (BX for all you Navy/Marine and Air Force types). Is anyone else familiar with this knife, especially outside the military sytem?

bruce, you can see that knife here:

I think it's a heck of a knife. The seat-belt blade is bigger than the gutting blade on the hunter but it's shaped in such a way that I think it would be an excellent gutting blade. I think this is one I'm going to have to get my hands on.

...5 minutes later... I just ordered one! Something in the neighborhood of $37 shipped from Switzerland. I'm going upstairs to see if the little brown truck has arrived yet...

In this day and age of high-priced cutlery, it's nice to know you can still get a lot of knife for a reasonable price.

I think that's another great SAK Chad. The only difference I can see between the fireman and the jumpmaster is the corkscrew vs the phillips. I think they put the corkscrew on the fireman 'cause firemen get thirsty more often.

Yep, that's the one! Cost me $25 brand new through the PX. Maybe I should get a couple more for gifts.

I've been planning out this summers outings. Knifewise I was thinking my new Camillus Talon 154cm and my SAK Tinker. Now I want to replace the Tinker with the Jumpmaster, nice knife!

General Plan: base camp in a slide-in camper with a couple of 15km hikes/overnighters.

Moab -june
Tetons -july

I'm ready NOW!

I've done more with a SAK than all my outdoor knives put togrther. Because its the one on you, even when just wearing shorts.
Once you have the SAK habit you feel undressed without it; never leave home without it. Anything bigger or heavier, which includes Wave sized multitools, you will sometimes forget to take them. No excuse with the SAK though.
