So about a week ago, I chipped a tooth. One of thos big ones in the back of my mouth. Didn't hurt so I figured next time I'm at the dentist I'll mention and they will fix it (how ever they do that).

Anyways, a few days ago I start feeling this dull pain after I eat. No biggie. Feels like some stuck food between my teeth. Floss it out. This morning I notice there's a lump on my gums... hard as a rock. That dull pain seems to be constant. Maybe this beggar is infected??!!

Starting to think this might be serious, but I'm tempted to wait until after the weekend before I make an appointment.

So who else whats until the very last minute before they visit the doctor or dentist?

If you're not dead by Monday morning, get on the phone to a doctor or a dentist and tell them you need to see them ASAP if not sooner. You probably need an antibiotic. In the meantime, rinse your mouth frequently with warm salt water and/or the mouthwash of your choice. Personally, I think Listerine is the most effective.

Hate to tell you this but, that sounds like an abscess. You're going to need a root canal. Don't get worried though, they're not as bad as people tell you. It just takes a while in the chair to get the the pulp cleaned out and rubber put back in. Hopefully, most of your tooth is still there so capping it will be a relatively simple matter.

Yes, you can wait until early next week unless the pain becomes unbearable which is not likely.

Might I add that Advid Cold & Sinus seems to be great for toothaches! It's helped me...I had two abcessed teeth at one time in the top/front. Root canal on both at the same time. I personally don't think it's any worse than a filling...they deaden it up more than a filling and you just have to put up with the aggravation of keeping your mouth open for along time.

If you are old enough and it is the last tooth in the back, many dentists could recommend just extracting the tooth. I have one in the top/very back that keeps cracking a filling. Eventually it will just be pulled.....I'd like to hit the big 40 first though.

Abscess. Clove oil on a cotton ball applied to the area can help the pain and swelling for some people, but you definitely better get to the dentist.

I used to do that with the dentist. It's not worth the pain and anxiety--trust me on that. I go every six months, and since my gums and teeth are in good shape now, the visits are one hell of a lot less traumatic.

What a relief.

Thanks for the replies. Did some reading... sounds like an abscess. I would have thought the lump would be soft, but its just as hard as he rest of my gums. It actually doesn't hurt at all right now. But then I've been buddying up to the Wild Turkey this evening.

I'll call the dentist first thing Monday.
