That looks great Mike, but I still don't quite understand what people use the spatulas for these days.

Hi Mike,

Spatula looks good! I did have a few questions. Did you shoot for the 55 RC on the spatula for a particular reason? I have not made a spatula (nor doctor's pattern for that matter) yet but I would have drawn back to spring temper or about 50 RC.I am not suggesting what I would have done is right or better. Also did you taper the spatula or leave it tang thickness to end?

Keep up the great work, always an inspiration to me.

Ken

Hello Ken,
Great questions. You are right Spatula could be 50RC which is what I Temper my springs at but thought I would shoot for something between blade and spring. After heat treat I checked on my Rockwell Tester and it came out to the 55RC. I think that either is more than acceptable.
I did taper Spatula. Actually I did a flat grind on Spatula and stepped down both sides equal amounts (hard to tell from pics but you can see the shoulder.). Thanks for questions.
Mike

Very nice, Mike. I think the Dr's knife pattern with spatula is my favorite. You have done a nice job with your first one. Hope to see more.

This is going to sound totally ridiculous, but I think a doctor's knife with spatula would be great for spreading peanut butter, jam or cream cheese on a piece of bread! We were camping in eastern Washington last weekend and my wife thought that my Nontron wasn't the best for that sort of thing - and she was right. Hate it when that happens. Anyway, I got to thinking and what I'm really looking for is a doctor's knife with tweezers and a toothpick as accessories, kind of like a SAK, only classier, which I think would make a great picnic knife. Which custom maker could make such a thing?

MIKE
beautiful job i am drawn towards the doctors knife myself for some reason i will be making two in damascus and possibly mammoth scales .
