I am considering picking up a doctors knife for edc and was wondering how rugged they are? I wont be driving it through any car doors or anything but that long skinny blade looks a little dainty. For example How would it hold up to carving up a few marshmellow sticks?

regards,
Ben

Ben,IMO,it's basically a straight jack,with a spear blade.
I think it'll be fine. Will someone please concurr .

Should hold up fine for EDC use. I would imagine they got used for, and can withstand, a lot more than we might think as a doctor's tool back in the day.

for light whittlin, cutting open boxes. & cutting zip ties should be fine. you could do a few trout also if you wished.

Try a rough rider for under ten bucks then if you like the pattern you can buy another.

I think you have to carry one to learn about how to use one. I have tried to respond a couple of times, but am having a hard time expressing my thoughts on it.

When you feel the limits of the knife with regard to "digging the tip" or applying a lot of pressure over the length of the blade, you will learn how to cut with the the traits of the knife.

I don't have a doctors knife but I do have a muskrat that has 2 long, skinny and "dainty looking" blades. I have carried it almost daily for 6 months working as a contractor and it has handled everything I've asked of it. I am sure if you buy a quality doctors knife and keep the pressure on the cutting edge it will serve you just fine.

I don't have a modern one, but the old Case XX 6185 doctors knives are not dainty at all (they're 3 5/8" - 3 3/4" knives after all) -- I wouldn't hesitate to use one for anything its blade shape is suited for, with the only limits being the same as any other traditional knife - they're for cutting, they're not sharpened pry bars.

I have a Queen regular production Doctor.
It is not dainty, it will take work well.
The blades are SS, which take and hold a good edge and do not patina
I use it as my picnic knife, and it does what is needed including food prep and marshmellow sticks!
In use the not so short secondary pen for a lot of tougher cutting
No I do not use it for fire starting ect......

I want one with a spatula, the ulimate peanut butter spreading tool......:)

I never had one, so a while back I got a cheap Steel Warrior to try out. Works fine. Nice little knife.
