Documenting my homemade strop

I decided to make myself a strop. Here's some pics. The wood is 1x2 poplar (I think - it's been lying around for a while). The leather is a toolable bookmark I bought from Hobby Lobby @ $2.20 for 2.

I shaped the handle by hand with a rasp.

Here it is cut to length with some preliminary sanding done - next to my Izula of course!

And the leather strip set on top. This is not finished, just for reference. More to follow as I progress. I don't have course enough sandpaper yet as the rasp put some pretty deep gouges I'll have to sand down to. I'm considering staining the wood also.

That 'bookmark' leather actually looks thicker than I'd assumed it would be. Looks like it could work nicely for you. And the shaping of the board/handle is a lot more than I did with mine (mine are just 'blocks'). Looks like it'll be a comfortable grip.

Nice job on the handle, I'm anxious to see how it turns out...especially if you stain it.
