If I had a Spyderco Dodo with Blue G-10 what could you do to change the handle? Could you dye it a different color or change the material? What kind of material do you have available to make handles?
Hi Tom. If you look at the sticky posts at the top of the page one of them is titled Spyderco Mods Links or something to that effect. There are four or more Dodos I've redone for customers over the years in those links. They are all listed.
The Dodo is a good knife. I like it and consider it one of the all time classics from Spyderco. I also am quite proud to tell you that the way I modify these for folks its not permanently modified at all. What this means is that no collector or historical value would be lost by a permanent mod to your folder and that you can always slap it right back together the way it came from Spyderco. I use all the original parts with the exception of the clip which is the one part I have not had any luck reproducing so I make one of my own for it. You'll see all that there in the links though. Of course the new clip will only work on the new handle scales but all the stuff I don't use is usually mailed back to the customer unless they donate it to me for my parts collection. Some of the old customers did in fact donate parts like the clips and other things to me and these have come in handy for some members here when the knife was discontinued by Spyderco.
The aluminum is your cheapest option. Ti and micarta are $200 and $225 with a low rider clip.
The aluminum one though is something I can do for much less since I snagged the stock I have at a yard sale from a guy that worked for Cesna and paid very little for it local.
On that I could do it for $135. This makes for a good looking folder in bead blasted finish and its also quite light and rigid at the same time.
I think of all the ones I did I like this one the best personally too for whatever that is worth.
Time frame. I'd be hard pressed to get it back to you by xmas at this point. Probably early Jan. 08 most likely if I got it next week.
Wooooow, I would definately do that with the aluminum, but the price is a bit steep because the Dodo I woudl be gettign is $125!! So when I buy it I will give it a little pocket time before I send it off so I ahve time to get a little more money
