My friend recently examined my knives with the intention of buying one for himself. He really liked my Calypso Jr, so I ordered one for him on his behalf.
It arrived this morning, but unfortunately has to be returned to the dealer.
The blade had a really ugly grind near the tip - quite Dodo-ish.

Just looks like it's been a bit over ground near the tip to me. Mine was like that but not half as bad. I see a number of kitchen knives that have the same mistake in. I don't find they function worse because of it though. I guess on a folder it will wear it out as lot quicker though.

I liked my Calypso Jr. so much, I purchased a second from the SFO. When it arrived I was disappointed to see the tip had an odd shape to it.
It didn't occur to me to send it back, ( I should have) I just put my original Calypso Jr. into my collection & started using this odd shaped one as my work knife.

I wonder if Spyderco would re-grind theses?

FWIW, I clicked on both images to enlarge and held the edge of a piece of paper up the screen and for me the last 1/2" or so isn't actually hooked -- it's straight. Have you tried this? Just wondering if it's an optical illusion.

If you could see the knife "in the flesh" you would appreciate my concerns.
Compared to my Calypso Jr the grind on this one looks awful.

Whether it's straight or hooked, it's not the standard shape, that's for sure.

I have a Native that has that same tip grind. I traded for it, so I don't feel right sending it back to Spyderco. I wonder what causes that?

At least some part of the final sharpening is done by hand. If it's quite a bit (main edge bevel) and/or if somebody slips up, it could account for the missing metal.

Seki City's Mad Sharpener strikes again! :D

My new ZDP-189 Calypso Jr. is ground similarly to the one above. Maybe not quite as bad, but it's not quite got the full belly of some I've seen.

What makes it even funkier than the one above, though, is the lamination line. Instead of the regular smoothish curved line, or straightish line with one or two little bobbles, one side looks like an 8-year-old tried to carefully draw a straight line without a ruler, and the other side's lamination line has a Reverse-S going on at the tip. A hamon it's not. ;)

I don't think any of this will materially affect the Caly Jr's ability to be a good slicer, and I didn't buy the knife for purely aesthetic reasons, so it's not going back. Besides, don't the Japanese value imperfection and unique variation over regular symmetry in some designs? Maybe mine is a masterpiece! :D

If I throw mine into a pile with 30 other Caly Jrs, I'll always be able to identify it. :)

I wouldn't worry about those little variances. Just use it and eventually those will sharpen out of it down the road.

Mine was sort of like that, but still curved upward. Just an obvious less-curve towards the tip.
