Dodo sharpening...any suggestions?

I tried to search for this topic to see if it had been discussed before, but the search function just doesn't get along with my Vaio, I guess. I hit enter and it goes to a blank screen. Anyways...

I've been trying to get a really nice edge on my PE Dodo and I'm not having much luck. I'm using the 30 degree setting on my Sharpmaker and just using the corners of the stones. No matter what I try or how many strokes I go through, I just can't get the inside curve as sharp as I would like it to be.

I use this knife at work a lot to cut appliance boxes, plastic bands, twine, etc, so the inside curve gets most of the work. Any suggestions on how to bring back the edge? I'd prefer to stick with the Sharpmaker as it works great on all my other knives. I can get my ATS-55 Endura shaving sharp with a few minutes work, so I get frustrated when my Dodo won't do the same. Especially since it cost twice as much :)

Thanks in advance for the advice!

I cannot tell you but the 701 ProFile stones have been getting a good write-up about its ability to sharpen the serrations.

my bad ----- "corners of the stones" had me confused, never saw a round anything with corners

s30v sharpens so easy for me-

I found that I had to freehand the Dodo to get it factory sharp.

As an aside, knives I use for plactics I generally only go with the medium rods.

And I use PROFILE 701 rods (I think thats the right number) for the Dodo and similiar curvy blades.

Ahh, a possible convert to the "I hate recurve blades because they make sharpening a pain in the butt" school of thought!

Joiiiiiiin ussssss! :p

Hate sharpening it, love having it! It fits my hand really well and gives me great control no matter what I'm cutting. If I could get one with a Yojimbo style blade......

There used to be an older sharpening kit that Spyderco sold called the GALLEY V sharpening system. The stones that came with that kit were "Cat's Eye" shaped and contoured to fit a "reverse S" blade perfectly. If you can find one of those Galley V stones from a knife dealer who may still have one on the shelf you will find it to be a great stone to sharpen your Dodo with.

Also I have to concur with what Michael Cook just told you. The Spyderco 701 PROFILE set of ceramic files is a great sharpening tool not only for the DODO but a great tool for sharpening most serration patterns. The Galley V Stones may be a tough find but if you can find one or 2 of them you will find them a valuable addition to your Sharpening tool kit. JD

I'm thinking about getting the Profile 701 set from NGK. Does one just have to free hand sharpen using them? I've never been the greatest at freehand sharpening.
